Now in the galactic sense of things water is fairly rare, so when you find it you take special note of that fact, especially if its in large quantities. Unfortunately for the explorer's readings, due to Corona being in the middle of a dense Nebula they were unable to get readings on the surface temperature or general environment down on the planet's surface, but they had found water, that was the important part. Nearly a century and a half later an official expedition was sent to Corona to try and set up a science station in an attempt to learn more about the planet. three Expedition ships were sent there. The Akula, The Singapore, and the Texona. In the beginning life was harsh, they literally had to salvage everything they brought with them just to survive on the planet, as they found out the hard way this was no tropical paradise but rather a frozen hell hole despite being in the fabled "Goldylocks zone" in orbit around the system's star. To make matters worse there were no decent landing zones causing the Singapore and the Texona to break through the ground upon landing, and while the Singapore was presumed lost, the Texona managed to salvage the situation despite falling into a several kilometer deep ravine. And while the Akula managed to land on a mostly stable area, the years were not kind to it. constant snow storms burred the massive expedition ship in years and constant catastrophic storms and ice shifts left the Akula buried under a dome of snow with only it's planetary antenna managing to stick up out of the mess. All of that was around 50 years ago or so, and to be honest, Corona is still a frozen hell hole. Now though the colonies are getting an influx of people. A group of mechanized miners signed up to go to a planet not marked on any galactic map, a group of miners signed up to go to Corona. After receiving lucrative offers from a recherche institution of course. These miners didn't even know what they were getting into. Last year their RIGs were shipped to Corona to prep for their arrival, this year though, the miners themselves arrive... and all they were told was to dress warm. Thank you for filling out the mandatory 200 page questionnaire to determine your candidacy for the roll. The Following should help you prepare for your stay on Corona. Deep Space Victoria Survival tip number one: Know your storms there are five classes of storms based on unique characteristics. in ascending order of severity they are : chancellor, cardinal, bishop, monarch, and emperor. Details can be found on page 185 of your DSV operations manual. memorize and know the difference. stay safe-stay alive. Cabal has found the message you were looking for. Displaying now... Hey, This is Edgar down planet side. Thaught i'd go over the types of equipment you'll likely be using. Now what you bring with you is up to you, but that little tip on the employment brochure about bringing an extra pair of socks, yeah that's not a tip. do that. We're in it for the long haul out here so staying smart helps us stay alive. First things first. That bulky Environmental suit that looks like winter gear on steroids? That thing will become like a second skin to you and you'll feel naked when it's off in time, not the good kind of naked where you'll be having a bit of fun, but the bad kind... the real bad kind and even that's an understatement. The suit's bulky for a reason. all that extra bulk, padding, and isolation keeps you warm for starters, but it also conceals and protects an intricate network of wires and heating veins throughout your suit. Worse comes to worse it should help protect you in storms up to Cardinal class, though it will have trouble with bishop and higher. don't ask about the storm names, some religious history nut here planet side named them and they just sorta stuck. but keep in mind, Even a chancellor class storm is around ten times worse than most arctic blizzards you'll find on earth. wind speeds up to around 90MPH or 144 or so KPH. Won't even get into the windchill factor or how cold it is normally, though i will say this, there's not a place on this planet that we've found in over 50 years that's warmer than -184 degrees Fahrenheit , or -120 degrees Celsius. so yeah, it's cold. now that we've covered that, time to cover the things on your shoulders. You've got 3 heaters on each shoulder. the glowy bits? yeah they're not there to provide light they're there to provide warmth, so it should go without saying to not touch them... they are hot. they have to fight off the previously mentioned tempature and more... if you ever notice for whatever reason that they aren't glowing anymore, get back to your rig! not just in umbillical range but inside your physical rig! without all six of those things going constantly you will literately freeze into a solid human Popsicle within a few minutes, and if you're thinking i'm having some sort of sick sense of humor about the solid part, i'm not. that's how we lost Greg Chatnit, one of our engineers. then again greg was caught in a bishop storm so take that for what you will. Oh yes, that little canister that sits right above your ass on your back. almost forgot about that. that thing is actually glowing for light so it's safe to touch. That thing has three purposes. First, it lights your ass up on our tracking station so we can always track where you are and what you're up to. Second it acts as your suit's power source, kind of important that. and lastly and most importantly, it acts as an emergency rescue beacon. To activate the rescue beacon remove it from your back, now you're gonna notice your suit's gonna loose power right off the bat. with that in mind, quickly twist at it's center and pull it apart. a heated spear tip will come out of one end and an dish will come out the other. jab that thing in the ground and stay within 10 feet of the thing at all times till we get to you! it will generate it's own mini umbilical field at that point to power your suit's communications systems and heating, everything else will be offline including most if not all functions for your cabal wrist computer. don't use it unless you are in true danger or are injured out in the field. right then, i'll let that all sink in for now. i'll send you another message regarding rig choice in a month or so. till then get to know your suit, go camping in it that sorta thing. one last thing, the two extra bits on your shoulder right next to your head? well closest to your head. those are actually just lights so they're safe to touch. yeah, had a few people freak out realizing they had 4 things on each shoulder not just 3. but yeah, with you in a month! Loading next message... please wait. DSV survival tip number 2. Head hazard warnings. All D.S.V-approved vehicles and utility rigs are equipped with hazard sensors designed to keep you aware of potential dangers in the environment. do not consider these warnings advice- consider them gosepl, Stay aware-Stay alive. ============================================================================================================================================ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ============================================================================================================================================ Hey Greg here again! hope you got used to your suit. oh yeah also get used to these one way conversations. not thata it's one way down here but this far out in deep space all we can do is record messages for people and send em. by the time they get em like a week or so down the road.... yeah bit long to wait for a reply in a standard conversation. Hello! one week later... HI how's bob?... yeah you get the idea. So as promised time to talk to you bout that utility rig of yours! There's a few things to consider when choosing the rig that's right for you so just keep a few things in mind alright? now don't worry bout enviormental condition mods we'll equip all those here planet side once you send it our way. First thing you'll want to figure out is do you want it bipedal or do you want it to have more than just two legs? Most are familiar with the bipedal standard utility rig. big, hulking, scares the shit out of most wildlife when you're walking around and comes with a mariad of arms to choose from. well aside from the standard gripper arm, that three finger wonder is kind of a standard. So, Here's your choices for your other suit's arm if you're going biped. 3 tip mining drill! these things are great. each drill spins, and then the set spins. drills pull back the ore and deposit it through the arm into your tank so great for mining or doing a bit of light digging. Buzz saw is another choice. no ore mining here but you can make some clean cuts in a few things. Industrial size chainsaw arm is always a classic, not just for deforestation trust me. those things cut through the thick ice here just fine, sure the chain snaps every once and a while but what machine out there doesn't have a bit of trouble every so often. Well that's all the arm choices for the bipedal utility rig. Now lets talk about that walking crab bot some of you are fond of. Four legs, more stable than a biped, can scuttle up most surfaces provided the surface can support it's weight... yeah the crabs are good for getting to strange spots, so lets talk about arms. Unlike the biped the crab bot doesn't have the nice three prong gripper that we love so much here. it's two pronged vise grip however gets the job done for the most part. sure there's compatibility issues here and there but hey, competing companies, whatcha gonna do with proprietary tech eh? Second arm choices are as follows. Pilebunker! personal favorite of mine. sometimes you just need to give something the good ol one two of a pile bunker. because who doesn't need to use a battering ram every once and a while to break something? Plasma cutter is another arm option. Great for welding metal or cutting through it. we've used this a few times as we had to salvage our ship to make basecamp. also great for repairing other rigs. Lastly the crab's got The Tow launcher. Essentially shoots off a pike with an industrial strength cable behind it. this thing allows the crab to haul things up sheer cliffs... and by things, well we've mostly used it for other rigs. namely bipeds. though if you are rig hauling, be sure to use the magnetic pike and not the ice pike.... so yeah that's done. time to choose and buy my friend!
