History/bio: She was seven years old the first time she opened her grandmother’s grimoire. It had been only five years since her parents died, when she was two. As she had turned the brittle and yellowed pages, she had been convinced it was an old recipe book, as she read the first pages, that were for things like pasta, chicken pot pie, and risotto, all written in a swirling and elegant cursive. As she continued to delve deeper into the grimoire, the recipes changed to things like, To Repair Split Ends that listed ingredients for aloe vera, shea butter, crushed egg shells, and a lock of hair cut from a toddler. Towards the back of the book Clover read things she knew she wasn’t meant to. Spells, and potions tilted For Forgetting and To Forcibly Bind a Heart, that called for ingredients like sleep breath, belladonna root, grave dirt, and fresh spilt blood. Her grandma caught her reading it of course, and after a thorough scolding the old woman tucked little Clover into bed, kissed her cheek, and promised to explain it all when she’s was ready. It took another three years until her grandmother deemed young Clover ready, and she began teaching Clover the craft every day after school. She started with the very basics like how to grow your own ingredients, where to cut yourself to produce an adequate amount of blood for small spells, and what plants like rosemary, primrose, and yarrow are best for. She taught Clover about covens as well, how a family of witches is supposed to stay together, and how they teach and protect one another. On Clover's 15th birthday, they went to pay respects at her parents graves, as they had done before. Clover’s grandmother finally tells her how they died, and what had happened to their own circle. Both her mother, Anise, and her father, Orion, were naturalis witches who fell in love in high school and married young. Not long after Clover was born, Orion began staying away from the house for long periods of time, only returning to sleep and then leaving as soon as the sun rose in the morning. Anise had become suspicious and left Clover with her grandmother one night. She followed Orion and caught him with his human lover. In a jealous fury, Anise sealed off the exists with an incantation and burned the house to the ground with both Orion and his lover still inside. Anise was burned at the stake a fortnight later for the crime of killing another witch. By the time Clover graduated from high school, she has learned all her grandmother could teach her, so Her grandma told her about Gringore Academy and how it was made for all the different magical people, including witches like them. She urged Clover to go there, possibly find a Coven of her own, and to learn what others had to teach her. After two years of pleading, Clover relented and enrolled in the academy, and just before she left for school her grandmother passed down her own grimoire to Clover, the old one she had sneakily read when she was seven.
