So my AP Lang class gets pretty wild, our teacher is absolutely fantastic but she still lets us (me mostly) go off on tangents every now and again. One corner of the room is home to a little circle of more "popular" kids (sporty, academic, attractive etc) and this one athlete dude who's been bantering with me back and forth the whole year said "Helen is so cool though" and that is one of the best compliments I've received all year, not gonna lie. (This whole year has been both stressful and fantastic for me, I found a new friend group who all appreciate me more and I've grown quite a bit both personally and academically.)

Admittedly this is the same dude who sometimes lowkey makes fun of me, but I don't think he means anything harmful by it beyond what he's used to as far as messing with the less popular kids. Just something nice to tell the rotting corpse of Spam.

Helen is an odd boy's name.

As I, for some reason, believe you are a magic stick wielder.

If by "magic stick" you mean shotgun, I've wielded that before.

Just don't tell them about us. If they know about us, they will reject without a second thought.

So, you got some cool points and then came to tell spam about it? Congratulations. That was the least amount of time I've ever seen anyone gain and then lose cool status.

Happy to break a few records.

To be honest, I was already rejected way back in middle school when everyone found out I was a lesbian. I can only advance.

Rejected for being a lesbian? Isn't that usually a plus?

Even though lesbian means they're attracted to females rather than males, people I know generally thought it was pretty hot when two chicks was together.

And then they'd bash pretty discriminately on gay men.

PS: How is indiscriminately a word but discriminately not?

I think it becomes discriminatingly. You can be discriminating or undiscriminating, but not indiscriminating. So I guess the trouble arises that both in and un discriminate are valid, but only un seems to become an adjective. Yet all of them have adverbs, so in skips the ing step to get there.

I was with you when I started looking into this, but indiscriminately is the one that feels like an aberration now.

Edit: So discriminate comes from Latin, and as I understand it that means in should be the prefix. I guess indiscriminating might just sound wrong? Help.

It is undiscriminating or discriminating, but when you drop the -ing then you use indiscriminate. Don't know why. This is what we accept.

Also, rules always take second place to common practice. Your English teacher would spit and moan, but it is the truth. Language experts in the distant past tried to destroy won't for the same reason they succeeded in getting rid of ain't - because it technically doesn't make sense. Do+not becomes doesn't, and is+not becomes isn't, but somehow will+not becomes won't and am+not becomes ain't.

But practicality and common usage are always more important than rules. Ain't is easy to replace with isn't, but won't doesn't really have an alternative so we kept it.

The most important part of language is effective communication, and the reason you need to know the rules is so you know how to be formal. If you consider yourself a writer, you also need to know the rules so you know how to break them effectively.

It's most likely a now unproductive phonological rule. Happens all the time.

Also that's really cool, robeatics. I know a guy who took that, said it was like a linguistics class. Im jelly, my hs didn't have that.

And hey, enjoy that validation. It can help boost you up, plus compliments are gr8. Don't let anyone here talk you out of it.

Yeah, no. These are white teenage boys faced with a lesbian who isn't a straight female porn star without bits of acne and teenage proportioning awkwardness. When some classmate of mine found out he acted genuinely shocked and horrified, one girl said I was going to Hell, and I've had a myriad of rumors swirling that only died out about sophomore year. Just because something is sexualized doesn't mean it's accepted. Try to ask those same guys how they'd feel about an elderly lesbian couple.

Thanks, man. Yeah, my school has a ton of nice advanced courses, but of course the tradeoff is that all the students are pushed towards the hardest courses available or else they're considered stupid.

I suppose that makes sense, but around here lesbians ain't to common. They're a rare species and keep their identities confined to their native habitats.
