So for those familiar with the Sony IP "Infamous" already know the basic gist of the universe and such, which means you already know why this setting is kickass and cool. For those unfamiliar, "Infamous" is a series that's essentially a super hero sandbox game franchise for the PS3 and PS4. Last year we got the third installment to infamous, titled "Infamous: Second Son." In the universe of Infamous, there are people that are called "Conduits," or by the majority of normal people "Bio-terrorists." These are people that have the ability to manipulate and absorb a unique form of matter, as well as even transform their own body into it. Instead of trying to explain it, I'll just use an example of how this works. Lets say you are a conduit that can manipulate smoke. A smoke conduit has the ability to throw blasts of smoke, create smoke clouds to incapacitate people, turn into smoke to dash, hover by creating thrusts of smoke, and travel through vents, fences, etc. by turning their body into smoke and moving forward. However, you need to refill your energy to continue doing this, so you can absorb smoke from fires, vents, and other things that have smoke exhaust. You can also heal yourself from wounds immediately by doing this, or allowing your body to heal naturally, which is exceptionally faster due to conduit genes (essentially you can regenerate from bullet wounds as long as you hide and don't continue to get shot.) So, the "gimmick" of the games is that while it does have a well written/slightly weird plot, it's still a sandbox game about having super powers. The thing that helps you along is what's called the karma system, where you can choose to either become a hero, or infamous (roll credits (extra points for whoever gets that reference)). The reason this matters is because you gain access to new powers based on whether you're good or evil. Become a hero, you get better healing abilities as well as abilities that merely subdue your enemies. Go evil, you get better at killing people and generally more destructive abilities. This won't matter to much to the RP as I won't be dictating a strict karma system, but this matters for the spoilers I'm gonna share for those that are interested. Here are spoilers for the first few games but you'll need to know them if you want to get involved in the RP. Here's a hider for everyone.
In Infamous 1 the main character is Cole, a messenger that gets caught in an explosion from a package he was delivering. This in turn awakens the conduit gene in both himself and all the inhabitants in the City. From there he uses his new found conduit powers of electricity to fight the newly formed gangs, and finds out that the final boss is actually himself from the future. The reason his future self did all of this was because in the future a monster called "the Beast" begins to go around and blow up cities all across the world, killing his future wife. His past self had to kill his girlfriend(the future wife) and make Cole unlock his powers faster and get better at them sooner, that way he can confront the beast and make sure the world isn't destroyed. Unfortunately, as we as outside viewers know, time travel fucks everything up. In Infamous 2, after having defeat his future self, Cole encounters the Beast, who came into existence than he was predicted too. This force Cole to run to a new city, and there he only has a few weeks before the Beast catches up with him and could possibly destroy the whole world, so Cole has to train and beat him. Long story short, it turns out the beast is a conduit who was an ally to you in the previous game who instead of dying was awakened as a conduit. His ability is essentially becoming a giant magma monster that can blow up towns but awaken conduits within that explosion and they are alright. The reason he's doing this is that for some reason, a disease that's a future epidemic is slowly spreading, but conduits with their healing and different genetic make up are immune to it, so the beast goes around using his powers to awaken conduits, but kills many innocents in the process. Long story short from here, the deus ex machina is a device that has the ability to harness the powers of the conduits that actually cure the disease that's spreading across the world and stop the beast. The catch is that about 90+% of the people with the conduit gene will be killed in the process, including cole, several of your friends, and the beast. The karma system comes into play here a lot. The game allowed two endings, either you use the device and most conduits die, or you decide to turn on humanity and the beast actually gives you his power (a plot device established earlier through a machine that could transfer powers to other conduits) as he's grown tired of murdering innocent people (go figure). The good ending, where you decide to sacrifice the lives of most conduits (which is sort of a mini-genocide but you didn't kill your best friend and sacrificed your life, that's what counts) is what was chosen to be the canon of the INfamous series.
I was gonna talk about the third game spoilers, but I decided against it as I'm going to have this RP take place between Infamous 2 and Infamous Second Son. In Second Son, it's set up to take place 7 years after the events of Infamous 2, and in the third game there is an established government organization dedicated to hunting and capturing Conduits. You see, due to Conduits like the Beast, a mass panic spread throughout the world in fear of conduits. The head of the "DUP" is a conduit herself, but she actually brought in her first conduit after returning to her military group, gaining the government's trust and allowing her to form an organization to capture other Conduits. The RP will take place 2 years after the events of Infamous 2, in New York City. The focus will be on a group of 3-4 Conduits, trying to hide and survive on the streets as they avoid the DUP. Eventually though, they'll have to learn one way or another, that you can't run and hide forever.
