Hell, 5 takes place prior to Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 4. And Rising Revengence(which doesn't at all matter to the Snake storyline).

Also, for maximum story effect watch the videos/read whatever in the order of the timeline.
