The lighter spots are gray, and the darker spots are black. Pretty much exactly how they look. The way he sees it, the Force is neutral, and doesn't require a commitment to either side. He's even gone as far as to codify his beliefs: 'Amidst emotion, seek serenity. In serenity, seek passion. With passion, seek knowledge. With knowledge, seek balance. Through balance, know the Force.' He was raised in traditional Jedi beliefs, although he always questioned some; namely denying passion and emotion. He can be considered very similar to Qui Gon Jinn, except Varrik is pushing even further away from the direction of the council than Jinn had. Varrik is very progressive, considering the traditional nature of the Jedi. The council is wary of this, though they (barely) tolerate it because of his continued resistance to corruption. Despite his disagreements with Mace Windu, his influences on Varrik are abundantly clear. He's inherited a confidence in his abilities and the courage to match. He's humbler than Windu, less prideful (though this may be justified. Despite Varrik's high skill level, Windu is still the superior dueler). While they both believe that Jedi should serve the people of the Republic, Windu feels the need to preserve the Republic at all costs to protect the people, Varrik feels that the people should be allowed to make the choices of what they need for themselves (including breaking from the Republic, now that the Sith are removed from the equation). As a person, he's very even-tempered, and open-minded. He's very flexible and patient with other people. He does have the tendency to overthink things, and for better or worse, is a bit of a romantic. He's in-tune with his emotions, embracing them rather than shutting them in. He keeps himself in balance with both the dark and the light with intense mental focus. History: Varrik was born to the Tharn family, a young couple of farmers near a lake on Dantooine. As he matured, he started showing signs of Force sensitivity. Not wanting to lose their boy, the Tharns were reluctant to call attention to it, but it was only a matter of time until it was noticed. One of the neighbors summoned the Jedi to investigate, and they were able to talk Varrik's family into giving him up for Jedi training. They would miss their son of course, but took pride in knowing that one day he'd be a great Jedi himself. He took the training easily enough. He was as talented with the Force as any initiate, but his dueling skills were exceptional enough to be noticed by Master Mace Windu during the selection of padawans. During this time, he trained extensively in dueling alongside his master, in several forms with different weapons. In time, he chose the saberstaff as his preferred lightsaber. After studying the weapon's origins, he built the hilt to shorten/extend like Exar Kun's original model, so it could be used either as a saberstaff or a single lightsaber. He also started carrying a second standard lightsaber, not only as a backup, but to allow him to dual-wield when it would prove more efficient. Throughout his Jedi Trials, Master Windu became increasingly worried of his student's closeness to the dark side. He was eventually able to teach Varrik (with an immense amount of effort on both of their parts) a very basic technique of battle meditation, just enough to clear his own mind of an emotion gone too far. A failsafe, really, to ensure that if he happened to trip while walking the line, he'd fall towards the light side. Nevertheless, he never lost his way, and was promoted to a Jedi Knight with no major issues. Soon enough, the Clone Wars began. There isn't much to say specifically, other than that he participated in just about as many battles as most of the other Jedi had. He was promoted to Master for his actions in the war shortly before Mace Windu ended Palpatine's life. However, the war continued past that. Without the Sith backing the Separatist Movement, though, Varrik struggled to come up with a reason to disallow them from removing themselves from the Republic. After all, the Jedi's obligation was to the people, not the government. If the people felt it was best for them to go, then they should be allowed to make that choice for themselves. He's continued fighting for the Republic, but it seems the longer he fights, the less he feels he's doing the right thing... Equipment: He carries two lightsabers: - His go-to is a yellow saberstaff, similar to Exar Kun's in that the hilt is extendable rather than stuck in 'saberstaff' size. - The other is a standard lightsaber with a purple blade, for back-up / dual-wield purposes. Note, he does NOT dual wield them while the staff is extended. That would be ridiculous for a human. Other: - Doesn't restrict himself to light or dark Force techniques. - Is an exceptionally skilled duelist, almost able to hold his own against the best of the Order. - He's conflicted on the war. A push one way or the other might cement him as a Jedi or turn him towards the CIS. He remains, however, vehemently opposed to the Sith. - Is a part of the Sentinel branch of the Jedi order, specializing in computers.
