Bright red on white and a faint copper smell in the frigid air told Cateline she’d hit her mark. She heard the crunch of snow as the beast fell, and the ghastly snarls from the rest of the pack. There had to be at least a dozen in all. Each dog was huge to her, far larger than any of the predators she had seen before in the warm wilderness of her hometown. They were easily outnumbered. Though canines were not capable of strategy, she knew them to be smart enough to be a problem. Perhaps, she wondered to herself, this has been an ill choice. The cry that arose from the child on the hill was quick to assuage these momentary doubts, sending a deep pang of sorrow through her gut as she witnessed the wild tumult that was the wolf’s descent. Unable to get a clear enough shot through the scuffle in her opinion, she hoped those nearer to the battle would have a better chance of stopping any immediate danger in the following seconds. Cateline held her distance. Her horse was skittish enough to worry her, and she didn’t want to be thrown from her seat by the creature if it was suddenly frightened. The wolves scrambled from a large flash, seemingly disoriented for a moment, but not long, as they began to surround one of her companions. Nocking another arrow into place, she drew back the string, ready to fire a second shot. Again she steadied her breathing, rocking with the slight nervous steps of her horse. She aimed for one of the wolves in front of the knight and child, hoping to strike it and give his horse an opening to run from the rest.
