He was approaching a rather large village the sky suddenly darkened, he looked up to see that the moon was beginning to eat the sun. After a couple of minutes, the whole sun was covered and it was as though it was night! Hmph could hear shouts and screams from the near by village, as everyone above ground watched the sun be devoured. Hmph had lost track of time once the sun had shown it’s face once again. He exclaimed loudly with joy, surely this meant that it was time to teach the word of Threetna to all of the Herenthor. Today was the day. --- Tref was helping a woman who had dropped something she called ‘pottery’, or “Thaleese” in Herenthorese, while the sun had disappeared. This pottery was a strange thing, and Tref eagerly discussed it with the woman. Apparently she and some other Herenthor were taking mud, shaping it, and using the sun to dry it and create useful items. It was still a new practice, and there was much more exploring to be done. It reminded Tref of the work with the strange rocks, where people were taking them and melting them and then shaping it. “Maybe using fire would be helpful in this process,” Tref mentioned to this woman as they cleaned up the sharp shards. “That is an interesting idea,” the woman agreed, “my husband has been working with the strange rocks. He has found that not all of them will melt, and now he has been working to make boxes that will hold the heat of the fire while on works with the strange rocks.” “Oh, I think this is all so exciting. Life as we know it is changing, new creatures have been found, the people of Trefsth are discovering all new inventions. We are no longer just keeping to ourselves we are growing,” Tref exclaimed, a little loudly. By this point, all thoughts of the eclipse were swept from his mind, which never stayed on one thing for long. He left the woman to tend to her child and walked through the maze that was the village, eventually he found himself at the center, were a marketplace had formed, something very new to Herenthor society. One Herenthor was standing on a platform was standing around him, and some angry murmurs could be heard. Tref walked over to see what the matter was. “The truth is is that I believe the event in the sky was a sign from Threetna that today is the day her word will be spread. I already knew, but all the Herenthor need to know, so she sent the moon to tell us. There was no evil with today's event,” a Herenthor was explaining to the group. Tref budge and bumped his way to the front of the group and addressed the man on the stand. “Hello sir, my name is Tref, and this fine village is Trefsth. What is this talk about a Threetna that is making people angry,” Tref asked in a friendly tone. At this the Herenthor on the stand thought for a moment and answered, “I am a messenger from the God of life, who is called Threetna. All must worship her and her kind, or be destroyed.” This sparked Tref’s interest, “That sounds very interesting. I’m curious, what do you mean by ‘her kind’?” He wasn’t sure if he believed what the man was saying, but he was interested none the less. “Threetna is not a Herenthor,” the messenger replied, thrilled someone was taking interest, “she is a beast. Let me call one of her kin.” With that, the messenger let out a long toot. In a couple of minutes, a strange animal ran into view, attracting many strange glances. “Good boy, Ferf,” said the messenger, scratching the animal behind the ear, then he addressed the crowd and Tref, “My Ferf here will soon be a father, and once he his, I will give his children to some of you. Ferf’s kind have many children, and soon all of the Herenthor will live with one, as Threetna said.” The animal caught Tref’s interest more than what the messenger was saying. It seemed to have bands on its back. “ What are those for?” he asked, pointing. “I use those to control Ferf when we hunt. Ferf has been my best friend for many years. He will do anything I ask him. He has protected me, and I have protected him,” replied the messenger, rather proudly. “The animal will do whatever you say?” came a voice from the crowd. “Yes I have taught him how to hunt, where to excrete waste, and even a couple of tricks,” with that, the messenger clicked his claws twice, and Ferf rolled over. Tref was amazed and watched with wonder. Then he realized something, “Wait, I haven’t seen you around. What’s your name and where are you from?” “My name is Hmph. I have lived in the jungle for half my life, I was banished from the large village when I was young. I was once angry about it, but I have realized it has been part of Threetna’s plan to spread her word,” explained Hmph. “That’s very interesting,” replied Tref, unsure of how he felt. Hmph began to speak again, and Tref’s gaze wandered to the animal, reminding him of the strange bands on around the animal. “Where do those things that you put on Ferf come from,” Tref asked, interrupting. “Those came from a Thith. I have found that its skin is a strong material,” replied Hmph. As he was about to restart his preaching, an angry Herenthor cut in, “ How do we know you found that. What if you stole it! How could you have made such ‘amazing’ discoveries if you’ve lived in the jungle! I don’t believe a claw of this Threetna garbage! You are lying in order to steal our food!” Tref addressed this Herenthor calmly, “I am appalled that you would be so rude to Hmph, he is an amazing Herenthor with amazing ideas. I am unsure about what he is preaching, but no one is allowed to be cruel or rude to him on account of his ideas or preachiing, until we discuss them at the next village council. Now, I don’t want to hear any more yelling, if you are going to act that way, leave him alone and calm yourself done. Sorry about that Hmph, you may continue.” As Hmph was about to continue his speech, a Herenthor ran up to the group and addressed Tref. “Tref,” he began, winded, “Tref, The brothers Haffle and Driffle are bickering over a well again.” “Very well,” Tref replied, “ before I go, Hmph, I would ask you not to start any fights, not that you were. Also, try contacting a Herenthor named Ziffee. He has been trying to create something similar to that material you have on Ferf. I would love to see what you have come up with.” --- It was later that day that Hmph returned to his camp to dine with Ferf and his mate. He was a little disappointed, as he expected the rest of the Herenthor to be more accepting of his teachings. “Oh well,” he disclosed to Ferf, “I’m sure that they will come around eventually. Besides, I should be happy with the progress I have made. Tomorrow a group of thirty Herenthor and I shall begin work on creating a large building where we can worship Threetna and discuss her teachings. Once he was done eating, Hmph retreated to the shelter he had dug and fell asleep. Domestication:¾ Leatherworking ⅔ Religion: Complete Metal Work 2/6 Pottery 1/3
