Do you feel like writers use Greek Mythology too much in their stories? There's so many other kinds of myths out there waiting to be given exposure. What are your thoughts on the matter?

If anyone overused Greek mythology it was the Romans.

But for srs, I've never had a problem with it. I've never participated in a Greek-mythology themed RP. Most mythology RPs I've been in were original and I haven't had a lot of trouble finding them, although admittedly I'm not super big into mythology, so if I don't find one it's not a huge disappointment or anything.

I don't think the problem is too many themes and elements based on Greek mythology, so much as it is so little western exposure to much else, religious-thematic wise.

I doubt you'll find a lot of Asian media based on Greek mythology. Every culture is fascinated with its own history, and Western culture his no different.

I think this has been addressed in the last few decades, now that we've advanced to the point that we can easily access information about other mythologies with less filtering from old-school Orientalists and such.

It's also that most people rarely tap beyond the bare-bones of Grecian and Ancient Egyptian mythology, sticking with what they can find out of a children's encyclopedia and leaving it at that.

That's actually why I appreciate the Rick Riordan books, the guy does his homework, and then plays with it in ways that makes a disgruntled pre-teen appreciate Homer.

I think I had a discussion on this with [@vilagidiotx], plus some other mythos. We concluded that mythologies such as Greece are easily accessible to western imaginations. They're just part of our collective imagination. Much more so than the world of Hinduism or Chinese mythology. By comparison even, pre-Islamic Persian folklore and Turkish stories of Tengri Khan are much more foreign. Native-Americans usually only come up in the case of Westerns, but even then the concepts of the Great Spirit and associated, similar myths are ignored.

I will say I do have a lot of creative frustration when it comes to these easily accessible myths. With the internet we have a such larger library and we can break past misconceptions or pre-conceived notions and explore the world of something like West African Vodoun to build a mythological world. So it just feels fundamentally lazy to ignore these.

I literally grew up with Chinese mythology, later on I dived into Japanese mythology because of the many similarities it shares with the Chinese, but I can't seem to find anyone here who feels comfortable doing Asian mythology in RP; only 2 partners I have so far are open to my concept of trying something where the West meets the Oriental. Most that I encountered feel better sticking to West, which on the contrary I'm not that well-versed with - through personal reading and research I have a better understanding, albeit still nowhere knowledgeable as those who grew up with Western mythologies.

Greek mythology is so ingrained in our collective psyche that using anything else is like swimming against a current. If you're a strong swimmer, go for it, get places! But you could always go farther if you just follow the flow.
