Well yeah, but that happens in episode 23. (Also, she never really got trigger-happy... just cried a lot.)

Regardless, the tone of things gets [i]plenty[/i] dark as early in as episode 12. 24 I'd say is the darkest episode in the series, but at least by then you've had a chance to get used to the darker Trigun.
