We used to have a school for just one grade when I was still going to an elementary school in a small-ass town. The reason was that they had built a new elementary school and a new highschool, but the elementary school wasn't big enough, so they shipped the fourth graders to an old-as-shit building that had once been used as a middle school, while the middle schoolers were going to what I think had been the old high school. I believe it all had to do with the way the nineties worked. Like, back then people had quite a bit more money, so there were a lot of people moving into those small towns that were within commuting distance from the city. So suddenly, those small towns ballooned in population. Of course, only to be abandoned ten years later because of gas prices and the housing bubble.
