Hoyt is a very quiet person, and while a lot of people have mistaken him for a mute, he can be very social. He just is a little shy and isn't the type to waste words if it isn't important or worth talking about. He has tried to explain this to others in the past, but he likes to keep to himself rather than be called stuck up. He is also extremely smart, even though he is extremely young, due to the amount of time he has sent reading. He has been known at home to go a day or two without eating because he is reading.

He is often overlooked in the demon crowd, but he doesn't mind it. In fact the few times he has tried to make more friends within his group has lead him to get into trouble. Once even a fight after the feud that the leaders had to break up. Now he would much rather just hang around his friend and dorm mate Joe. He has both trust and temper issues, something understandable with the type of hybrid he is. 

No one other than the Arch Mage knows about his Phoenix half because it is rare. If he had his way the Arch Mage wouldn't even know despite the fact he actually trusts him. Even though he has been told not to worry about the other mages. Given the history between mages and the Phoenix race it is a great worry to him.
