The Green Lantern Corps have dubbed Krypton's sector of space 2813 (Earth's being 2814) and was under the protection of Green Lantern Tomar-Re when it was destroyed. Krypton's primordial era produced some of the most dangerous organisms in the Universe. It was for this reason that Krypton was chosen as the place to create Doomsday through forced evolution. Doomsday was an infant who was released into the dangerous environment of prehistoric Krypton and killed, the surviving and strongest genetic matter was cloned and re-released so the process could be repeated until the resulting being was powerful enough to survive. He became too strong, he killed most of the planet's population before clinging to a cargo ship fleeing the planet and went into space with nothing but a strong primal hatred of all life. Doomsday escaped Krypton via a ship that regularly came to deliver supplies to his creator, Bertron, who he also killed and went on a killing spree across several planets. Doomsday faced the Green Lantern Corps, killing several hundred of them, but was ultimately defeated by the alien hero Radiant and entombed. Since it was deemed that keeping them on their planet would be an insult, Doomsday was sent into space, at which time he eventually landed on Earth, tomb and all. Up until its destruction, many dangerous animals, including ferrophage moles, still existed on Krypton. Krypton during its Golden Age became an expanding empire that conquered other planets across the galaxy. The Kryptonian military was lead by Admiral Dru-Zod the First who commanded entire fleets of ships, seeking world's ripe for conquest. Some three-hundred years ago, Admiral Zod's capital ship, the Doomsday crash-landed on Earth in the region that would eventually become known as Texas. His Sunstone ship lie buried beneath the ground for centuries. Soon, the Kryptonian Empire was dismantled after the Kryptonian high council decided that their methods were too aggressive. So, ended Krypton's Golden Age. But as Kryptonian civilization flourished, the planet turned towards isolationism. Space exploration was abandoned as Krypton quarantined itself from the surrounding galaxy. All Kryptonians were unable to leave their planet or they would die instantly. This was the result of the Eradicator altering their genetic codes of Kryptonians to keep them planet-bound after a group of them left Krypton to explore and colonize other planets. The Eradicator punished these Kryptonians by altering their genetic codes to be vulnerable to lead, which resulted in the Daxamites. It was at this time that the young scientist Jor-El and his brother, Zor-El was both born. By their adult years, Jor-El became a high-ranking member of the Kryptonian Science Council and had a wife Lara Van, from the Labor Guild, while his brother Zor-El became married to Alura Ze, and had a daughter named Kara-El. Jor-El was a protege of the eminent scientist known as Non and together they discovered that Krypton was suffering from severe geological disturbances - disturbances that threatened to destroy the entire planet. Jor-El brought his concerns to the Science Council, but they dismissed his assertions as a vehicle of paranoia and discord. Jor-El and Lara even soon had a son named Kal-El. Many years ago, the penal system of the planet Krypton sentenced their criminals by placing them in suspended animation. Jor-El discovered the existence of the Phantom Zone and introduced it as an alternative means of imprisonment. He had little knowledge of the true inner workings of the zone, but believed that it was a more humane form of punishment over that which they had previously employed. He developed a projection device that could send and retrieve people into the zone with the simple flick of a switch. The first prisoner to be exiled to the Phantom Zone was the renegade scientist Jax-Ur. Jax-Ur, a former colleague of Jor-El's, was responsible for destroying Krypton's moon during an attempt at interstellar space travel. When the moon was destroyed, a lunar colony of Kandor was lost as well, drawing the attention of the Coluan villain Brainiac to Kandor. Brainiac, also known as Vril Dox I, was a Coluan scientist. At some point, he cloned himself to get a lab assistant; the clone would later be called Vril Dox II. He acquired a spaceship and went on a journey through space, acquiring knowledge and using his robotic drones to capture living organisms of various alien species. Along the way, he came to Krypton, and kidnapped the entire city of Kandor, miniaturizing it in his spaceship, while Jor- El 's brother, Zor-El and his family stayed behind at Argo City. An elite military unit, called Black Zero, commanded by General Zod's wife, Ursa was killed attempting to defend Kandor from Brainiac, except Ursa herself. Brainiac also created a remote scout unit, which was programmed to think it was the original Vril Dox. After Brainiac's attack, Zor-El created a force-field around Argo City using a Braniac Probe. Over a short expanse of time, the Kryptonian Science Council began exiling the worst of the planet's criminals into the zone, the most famous of which was the military insurrectionist General Zod. General Zod, the descendent of Admiral Zod, gained prominence in the Kryptonian Military Guild for his heroic, though futile, efforts to protect the city of Kandor from Braniac, however lost credibility however when he defected from the Kryptonian Defence Council, along with his wife Ursa, after they had been instructed to arrest Jor-El and Non after they both had made sensationalistic claims of Krypton's pending destruction. But, suddenly Non was abducted by the Kryptonian Science Council for continuing the claims and was brainwashed, lobotomized, and turned into a brutish, mute savage by the Council to be silent. When Zod, Ursa, and Jor-El found out, both Zod and Ursa sided with Jor-El. But, they and Non was arrested and tried for acts of sedition. They were sentenced to spend eternity in the Phantom Zone, where they would continue to exist as disembodied wraiths by Jor-El, which lead to their revenge against him and his heirs. Jor-El was later threatened by the Science Council with harsh penalty of exile to the very Phantom Zone he himself had discovered if he were to make public his predictions of their planet's imminent doom or otherwise attempt to "create a climate of panic." So he decided to create a star-drive ship designed for his only son, Kal-El, to escape the planet and its people's fate. Also, Jor-El had created a serum that he invented that would allow a Kryptonian to leave the planet safely; which he gave to his son Kal-El upon leaving for Earth. He also had his family dog in his household, Krypto used for a test flight of the rocket that would carry baby Kal-El to Earth. But, before he could do so, Jor-El explored the galaxy in search of a suitable planet and sent out dozens of probes designed to collect various data. His research revealed that Kryptonians living in a yellow-star system developed enhanced physical characteristics including super-strength, speed and agility. One of Jor-El's probes landed on the planet Earth where it was discovered by motorist Thomas Wayne while he was on a drive with a pregnant Martha. When Thomas touched the probe, his consciousness was instantly transported to Krypton where he met Jor-El so that Jor-El could better learn what kind of world Earth was to help him decide which of many possible candidates he should sent his son to. Although their meeting was brief, Jor-El developed a fondness and respect for Thomas Wayne. Thomas tells Jor-El that the people of Earth aren't perfect, but are essentially a good and kind race, who would raise the child right. He decided that Earth would be the perfect planet for his son to be raised. Finally internal pressures in Krypton's volatile core led to its destruction. Within a period of time, Jor-El's worst nightmares came to pass. Massive earthquakes erupted across the planet and Krypton literally shook in its death-throes. With little time to spare, Jor-El and Lara placed baby Kal-El into his rocket ship and sent him towards Earth. Meanwhile, Brainiac returned to consume Argo City. Krypto was too sent to Earth, but his rocket was blown off course and drifted in space for many years until the rocket picked up the signal from Kal-El's rocket that landed on Earth. Krypton exploded and everyone on the planet, including Jor-El, Lara, and the Kryptonian Science Council were killed. Now, all that remains is dust.

"Each time I think I've made a connection with someone... once they find out what I can do, whether it's hours or days later, everything changes. Invariably they freak. They get retroactively paranoid, wondering what else Clark Kent is hiding from them." Kal-El's ship would eventually find its way down to Earth and crash into a field in Kansas. It was here that Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent would find him. The two desperately wishing for children of their own but never able to have any due to medical complications took Kal-El in as their own hiding the remnants of his ship inside of their barn to protect him from the truth. Here Kal-El would gain his new name, a name of earth. Clark Joseph Kent. Here in the rural town of Smallville, Clark would grow up and spend the years of his childhood. Despite his parents attempts to keep his identity a secret throughout his early school career his Kryptonian heritage came into display. The earliest being when he was a small child and playing with blocks where his small hands crushed the wood material in his hands down to a fine dust not knowing the extent of his power. This came to head at the end of grade six where in the midst of a swift and terrible summer swell his School Bus went off the side of an old bridge and went plummeting into the water. Clark blacked out at the time but a few on the bus remembered what happened including two of his close childhood friends Lana Lang and Pete Ross. After these events Kal-El's parents were forced to come to terms with the fact that they couldn't just keep hiding his heritage and the truth from their son. Though Martha and Jonathan did have arguments over it with Jonathan worried about what would happen once the truth went public and would they fear his son, condemn him. None the less though two days after the Bus incident his father brought him into the barn where the remnants of his crashed ship remained all these years. Jonathan told him the truth about how he fell from the sky, wrapped in a cape one summer afternoon. Despite feeling that the act would tear his son away from him, he handed him his grandfather's cape that had been kept in the capsule ever since. It was the first time Clark had ever touched something from Krypton and it felt alien and yet like home Clark actually being brought to tears because of the event. Jonathan then sat his son down and told him what needed to be done. That his parents loved him but the rest of the world may not understand what he was and they might hate him for it. So that he would have to keep his true past a secret what little information he did know and try and keep his powers underneath wraps. After this and for the remaining years of public education he would become torn about his fate. With so little answers and many more questions he wondered who he was and what he was. He wondered where he came from and why he was sent to Earth. He wondered why his real parents had left him, did they truly not love him? During this time he also began to act out against the wishes of his father more and try and fight what little crime there was in the surrounding Kansas Area while wearing a hoodie to conceal his face. Though this would come to an end shortly before he graduated High School when he hit a man trying to rob a woman n and ended up putting the man into a coma and having the woman he had just saved run away from him in fear. He had a semi-serious relationship with Lana Lang and even reviled his powers to her but Clark's distance put the relationship into tremendous strain and they broke up. Lana would end up dating and marrying Clark's other friend Peter later on. During this time he was also visited by the heros of the future the Legion of Super Heroes soon after the incident with the mugger to restore his confidence and assure him that everything would be okay. They told him that he would be the hero of an Earth worth fighting for and that in their time he was to become one the greatest legends in the entire galaxy. Leaving him once again with more questions than answers. Still unsure of his future, Clark on athletic and academic prowess got into Metropolitan University where he decided to study Journalism. He figured if he couldn't use his powers for good, he may be able to help in another way by telling the truth. His time at the university would be well met meeting many varied individuals including fellow Journalism student Louis Lane. Through internships and hard work he ended up gaining the attention of one Perry White the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet. The DP was Metropolis' prominent newspapers and one of the more respected press sources on the American East Coast. Mr. White impressed with Clark's writings and his levels of commitment signed him on as a reporter along with fellow Metropolitan U graduate Louis Lane. Clark would travel across america and the globe for a few years after college reporting on the issues that plagued society while trying to terms with his destiny. Though he would be called home in late 2001 to tragic news. Jonathan Kent had been mortally wounded in a car crash. Clark arrived with his adoptive father on his deathbed. Here Jonathan maybe in his old age and maybe in his final moments told his son a different take on life. That he should not hide his powers because of the fear of being afraid, that Clark had to be the one that saved them all. After Jonathan's passing, a somber and worn out Clark walked through his old house retracing old footsteps unsure and angry at himself for not being there. Searching for old comforts he walked into his old room and there on a bed much too small for him lay a suit of some sort, Blue, Red and Yellow, emblazoned with an S just his size another of the artifacts of Krypton that had been stored away in the Pod. On it was a note from his adoptive father that read very simply. Dear Clark; I'm Proud of You. ~~ And thus Superman was born

"It is a remarkable dichotomy. In many ways, Clark is the most human of us all. Then... he shoots fire from the skies and it is difficult not to think of him as a god. And how fortunate we all are that it does not occur to him." And so in the shadows of one of America's greatest tragedies, Superman returned to Metropolis. He saw the city with a new lense one that was dark and seedy rife with crime and enshrouded it with darkness and he would be the light to cast away that darkness. He started out small donning his iconic costume only at night and dealing with minor thugs, gang bangers and drug pushers. Though even with this soon rumors began to accumulate of some man in a cape saving everyday citizens from danger with amazing powers. This was prompted by shaking camera footage of his antics posted on the Internet on forums documenting the rise of this new wave of heroes like Batman and himself. Slowly the people of Metropolis became more and more aware of their mysterious hero and soon he decided it was time to make his grand entrance. The time came during an attempted robbery of the Metropolis National Trust. Out from above the sky fast as a speeding bullet he came and without any effort stopped the robbers 18 wheeler truck with nothing more than an open fist. His appearance became some of the biggest news in the country as everyone wondered who was the superman? This included Metropolis Police Commissioner William "Bill" Henderson and the one and only Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor was the billionaire scientists and engineer responsible for the foundation of LexCorp. Using his highly developed background in Science, Engineering and Business as well as the connections of an upper class bringing he started out with five employees and these days has over five thousand. Starting out as a aerospace engineering firm, LexCorp would end up becoming a producer of what Luthor coined as "Future Technologies" experimenting in everything from genetics, computer science, biological engineering and everything in between. Following the hostile takeover of almost all of the other major companies in Metropolis, Luthor ended up becoming one of the richest men in the world and the heart of Metropolis making sure everything flowed and just the way he liked it. And nobody was the wiser that underneath it all it was just a front to run of the world's largest criminal empires. The rise of this filthy alien would be a hindrance to Luthor's plans. So Luthor drummed up the populace against the Man of Steel portraying him and his deeds as dangerous and reckless and that some "alien" such as himself had no place in the affairs of business. Some believed him and it did not help when Luthor much to the disgust of Bill Henderson got the Metropolis PD under his payroll and had them declare Superman as a clear and present danger to society. Yet most of the public rallied behind him as a hero and defender of the city despite Luthor's wishes. He would stop other crimes including a terrorist plot put forth to blow up the Daily Planet Building, stopping a brewing gang war in its tracks as well as dealing the the assassins that unknowing to him that Luthor had sent after him to attempt to deal with him and also to gauge the Man of Steel's own strength. Eventually though he would gain the trust of the American People after he defeated Metal-Zero an anti-Superman weapon that almost destroyed all of Metropolis and stopped the evil Brainiac from taking over Metropolis. He was revered as a hero of the people and was christened as the first of America and the world's new wave of heroes. During this time he also confronted Lex Luthor in his office and there Luthor explained that despite his success and heroics when it all goes wrong that he was going to be the one they blame. And that when he fell Luthor would be the one to pick up the pieces and rearrange them as he saw fit.

"You can't wear a mask Clark. When people see you and can see the things you can do, the power you have, they'll be terrified. They need to be able to look into your eyes, see your face, so that they can see the decency and kindness that's always there and know they have nothing to be afraid of." Following the events of so called "Year One", Superman would end up fighting more crime in Metropolis as more heroes and supervillains began popping up around the world. He would end up making new allies as well such as Jimmy Olsen, a new reporter at the Daily Planet and close confidant of the Man of Steel. Krypto after a long sojourn stuck in space would eventually crash down to Earth and reunited with last of House El. It was also a time of great darkness as Superman was first confronted with Darkseid, ruler of Apokolips. After a brief brawl Darkseid teleported Superman to his realm of Apokolips. Superman stuck in this dark and strange world attempted to start a rebellion leading those oppressed by the ruler to try and topple him and his regime. But Darkseid proved too strong and the rebellion was crushed though in the process, Superman was able to return home. Having his real taste of defeat, Superman promised to become stronger to deal with the darkness that threatened earth, Superman was shocked to meet a being calling herself Supergirl, someone who first appeared similar to Lana Lang. Supergirl explained she was from a Pocket Universe and pleaded with Superman to help save her world. Superman agreed and met the Lex Luthor of that universe, a benevolent scientist responsible for creating the Matrix Supergirl. He explained that The Pocket Universe exists solely so that the Legion of Superheroes can come there from the future. Superman left for the 30th Century and in an attempt to help save the day Luthor accidentally released General Zod, Faora, and Quex-Ul, three Kryptonian criminals, from the Phantom Zone. The Kryptonians proceeded to destroy the atmosphere of the Pocket Earth, killing everyone on the planet, save for a handful that Lex protected in Smallville. Superman was unable to stop them from killing the rest, Superman in a deep rage exposed the criminals to gold Kryptonite, taking away their powers, and then decides they must be punished for their crimes -- he exposes them to green Kryptonite, killing them. After burying Maxtrix he leaves the pocket dimension now only a world of death. The guilt of taking life would weigh heavily on Superman's shoulder . Superman mostly out of guilt would fall into a moderate psychological breakdown, and began fighting crime in the guise of Gangbuster. Long time vigliante and superhero, Guardian discovers this after a brief fight. Superman decides after what he's done that he has to leave Earth. After several adventures in outer space, Superman is captured by Warworld and confronts Mongul for the first time. He meets the Cleric and encounters the Eradicator. Superman is pitted against Draaga in Warwold's arena, and when he refuses to kill Draaga, Mongul attacks Superman. Superman is saved from Mongul by the Cleric, who teleported him away. Superman accepted the Eradicator device from the Cleric, who died shortly after of wounds received from his mistakes thereafter, and deposes Mongul as the ruler of Warworld. Draaga becomes the leader of Warworld, but is humiliated by his defeat at Superman's hands of steel. Tired he returned home back to Earth.

"You must not count on a Superman to patch up your lives every time." The prodigal son's return was met with little hurrahs or fanfare. Tired and disillusioned he tried to find his way back to normal life but found it difficult. His life as Clark Kent seemed so far beyond him now and the life ahead of him was clouded in darkness. He saw it all in front of him, all the gears and machinery connecting the big devices of life together and he saw that it was corroding. Despite anything he did every time he would put a villain behind bars another would rise in his place. Was he even fit to be the Superman anymore with blood upon his hands and the failure to save those he would of called his friends? Well life had funny ways of getting people out of ruts and Superman's came in the form of a ship long lost in space feeling from a destroyed world. Kara-El had landed on Earth Discovered and intercepted by Superman, Clark would find Kara, a girl about 10 to twelve years of age confused and with all of her senses absorbing the effects of Earth’s particular atmosphere and solar connection whilst awakened by a strange man bearing the symbol of her house on his chest; not a pleasant introduction at all. It would turn out that time would mend all wounds and the experience of at least having somebody that was of the House of El beside her would make it all the more easier. However this would come with consequences as her landing did not go unnoticed as SHIELD’s extraterrestrial division called SWORD, and Lex Luthor himself would investigate. Clark had to act quickly to get the girl out of there before either Sword or Luthor got her. So he got the hell out of Dodge, avoiding the SWORD response team but not before Luthor could witness the Superman flying away with a girl in his arms... a most interesting sight indeed. Clark then ran aground trying to figure out what to do next. He couldn't figure out exactly what to do with the Girl; nobody he knew as Clark would work and Martha was out of the question as well since despite being a strong woman in her advanced age she would be unable to handle the young girl as she began to adopt to her full powers. He couldn't just abandon her or send her somewhere far away and leave her alone and confused on an alien world and he couldn't let her become a test subject for Luthor or SWORD. As he weighed his options it became apparent that only one was truly left for him, taking the girl under his wing. It has been two months since then and has been a sort of learning experience for the both of them. Clark has slowly been getting back into the groove of things on Earth battling the Villains of tomorrow today. But he's still unable to shake the doubts from his mind as a new darkness approaches threatening to consume Metropolis and the world. To face the darkness ahead he knows he will not be able to go at it alone.... This mainly stems from the fact that when you have basically a nigh immortal god, making him relatable to us puny humans comes as an issue. Why should we feel bad for the man that bullets bounce off of and that can benchpress the Earth if he wanted? Well usually it is done in one of two ways either you ramp up the scale like some action movie always going for bigger explosions, to make him feel small and tiny you need to make your villana bigger and bigger to make him see inconsequential. This is a proven way of doing things and it is a reason why things like the Doomsday arc were so well received. Or you can go the other way and take things from a more psychological perspective, of a deeper analysis of this god-like figure and how he reacts and reflects the society he is in. See Superman: Red Sun and All Star Superman and these were always the stories I found more interesting. What I can say about Superman or the planned structure I have for him is one of growth and acceptance. Something of a coming of age tale if you want to call it that or more likely a coming to acceptance tale. Allowing a Superman still very much young and experienced to be able to find how to become the hero that his father always wanted him to be. While of course being open to other collaborative arcs with other heroes and the eventual creation of the Justice League if that ever happens as well as a collaboration mixing somebody's idea for Supergirl [sub]coughgowicough[/sub]. I can't promise that I will write the best Superman story ever told, if I did say that I would by lying to you. But what I can say is that this is a story I've been dying to tell and if you let me I'll do it as much justice to it as I can.
| References |
You know what I do.
