Light works differently now. If you jumped into Taken King, you'd be (I'm guessing?) level 32, and playing the story quests would bring you up to 40. Light is simpler now and makes more sense -- it's just the average value of all your gear. Yes I took the free level jump to level 25 and did the first taken king mission. This was after regularly leveling to level 10 though. So I haven't played house of wolves or dark below, missions or strikes or raids. Obviously I now feel I'm missing out on them!! 
Going back and playing them at higher level is fruitless no?
