That's pretty much BEGGING to get a sword through the stomach right there. Then again, I don't really know what happens to Balthier, but I'd put money on him dying. I wouldn't be extremely worried about it keeping everything crisp and exact, y'all. We've been given artistic license here, so if the story deviates no one can really say anything. Once the character you choose begins to act differently it's likely that everything will change from that point forward, and all you might have to learn is the big events that happened. Then again, since this "reclaiming their past selves" bit is based off of memory... maybe you could write it according to yours, as if your character's memory is a bit hazy and this is what they believed happened. Kinda like some Kingdom Hearts plot nonsense. For example, and I'll say this because I've seen no one else show preference for Final Fantasy IX and on the fact that I'll strangle anyone who chooses my character until they cry uncle or pass out, I'm planning on stepping into the shoes of Freya Crescent starting from her introduction in Lindblum and exploring her story in more limelight, greater detail, and with different choices made. After I begin with her I would only need to know the really big events that happen with her (without spoiling anything, The Festival of the Hunt, Burmecia, Cleyra, Fratley, and the metaplot of FFIX). Dialogue? I don't really need to know. Specific events? Will unfold however I write them, because what she remembers could be different. Maybe they could be wrong, but they're what she remembers and so it's what plays out. Once a certain amount of things has changed, I'd be free to take the story in any direction I'd want, if that makes any sense.
Heh, he survives, and makes two other story appearances in other games.
