Thomas, who had been perfectly content just moments before, became alert enough to growl quietly. Ophelia stroked his back to calm him. Zeke sat across from her, first giving his raven a jelly bean, and then offering the box to her. Ophelia reached her hand inside, pulling out a dark yellow jelly bean, then popped it in her mouth. Her face twisted. "Salmon," she said. “I hate salmon. And yes, actually. They always are. I'm their only child, you know. Plus, Dad's health has been fairly good since March, so my mother has been especially loving." She shrugged. Ophelia didn't say so, but this was a relief for her and her mother. Her father's health had been up and down since he first struck ill during her third year. But for the past six months, he had almost completely gone back to his old self and she couldn't be more relieved. They weren't entirely sure if he was better now, but her mother didn't take the chance. She made sure that her husband and her daughter knew how much they meant to her every single day. This summer had been particularly brutal, too. Well, maybe not brutal, but it seemed as if every time Ophelia tried to leave the house her mother would not let her go without saying "I love you" and squeezing her with an emotional hug. She couldn't even imagine what that woman was going through now. But Ophelia hated to think about that, so she pushed thoughts of her parents aside. She set her book beside her and took a bite out of her other cauldron cake. "How was your summer?" She said with a mouthful. She swallowed. "Your hair looks a little longer. A little brighter, too. But then again, that could just be because you're so happy to see me." She grinned.
