The Slender Smooth-Hound is fairly small species of deep-water shark in the genus Gollum, of which at least two other species are known but poorly described. The genus was named in the 1970s due to its bottom-dwelling nature and unusually slim frame. It is known to hunt and scavenge opportunistically on carrion, cephalopods, and shellfish in addition to other deepwater fish. In a trend shared by several other sharks, pups develop in the womb and are fed by a continual supply of younger yolks and embryos once their own yolk runs dry, a process called oophagy. Unlike most other sharks that practice oophagy, the growing gollum shark will store its meals within its own empty yolk so as to live off them continually while waiting for the next younger sibling. This whole process occurs twice per birth, as the female slender smooth-hound possesses a double uterus and will almost always birth twins.
