Well it would be used in different ways. Since an Explosion is an increase in volume and energy it could be used as a defensive technique too, but lets say for physical cuts its increases the damage like you said.
I intend on getting a little more technical with Kareha as thing progress and Isamu learns more and more about his sword xD
