It seems you haven't seen the show or read the books. Though knowledge of those isn't really necessary. 

Regarding stats, stuff like AGI and whatnot can only be altered by racial stats + equipment. You don't get to level up and add them. However, masteries will exist, and these are trained through repetition and use. Have you ever played Runescape or read novels like Moonlight Sculptor? Sorta like that. 

Player skill here is more important. If you've played Counterstrike, then you understand having a better gun or armour gives you a huge edge but you can still die to that guy with the pistol.
