For our defense forces I'm thinking maybe you and a couple of the militia could go out and tame/capture some decently leveled monsters. That would mix well with our militia forces since the monsters could be kept locally (close to their spawns) and used for the economy when not in combat while also being easily fielded and relatively strong for little cost if we have to go to war. It'd also give you a chance to do a cool combat scene. What do you think?
