He eyed his surroundings warily. The Hall seemed to him to be pulsing, riding on a gyrating wave of dance and music that heaved like the skyward chest of a sleeping troll. It was enough to make him feel stuffy in his coat, but he reckoned the Hall wasn’t even filled to maximum capacity yet. With one hand buried deep in the pocket of his black trousers, Zeke tugged at the silver bowtie, complete with matching vest. It was practically a silk choker. He had no idea how his mother had had the foresight to pack his formal getup in his trunk without his knowledge, but because of it Zeke hadn’t been able to slip out of the ball under the excuse of having nothing to wear. He had written to his mother about that, but she had only replied with a laugh in her inked words: Of course I knew. Besides, I figured you should wear something nice at least once this semester. Now, don’t forget to send pictures. And don’t think to pretend to forget. Your memory isn’t quite as atrocious as you make it out to be whenever I ask you to do the chores. Love you, Mother. Looking down at the polished dress shoes that had replaced his feet, Zeke smiled to himself the smallest of smiles, disappearing promptly enough when he raised his head to the crowd once more. He checked his wristwatch, seeing how time a relative concept was simply not moving in his favour now. Propping one heel against the wall behind him, he leaned heavily into a slant. It would be nothing short of a long night. Perhaps he would sneak off later, once the crowd grows to inexplicable proportions. But for now, Zeke settled in to watch the dancing couples and laughing friends.
