All right, I got another complaint.

Been reading up on the recents and I agree with them. One thing that irks me (and I'll be the first to admit that I've done this too, even recently) are Mary Sue Characters. Characters trying so hard to be unique and different.

I'm in a weekly game and there's this player (look to my previous complaint post) who made this character that just SCREAMS Mary Sue. It's like no creativity was given to them, instead she just took points from various games/shows/etc. and stuck them on to her character.

Now I am not saying you can't have some badass loner type, a princess who escapes from her castle to explore the world, or a anime-type young girl who does whatever, but at least spice it up and be creative. I speak from experience when I say I want a unique character. However, there's nothing wrong with being "common" either. The world is filled with common type people, we all have qualities that are different, sure, but we are all generally what could be called normal. There's rare instances, sure, and in RPs it's easy to make whatever you want and do whatever you like, but I cringe whenever I see someone striving to be the "shining star" in the game by having the most unique character.

I find, and I've noticed this in a few games I've played on here, that adding faults to your character is a good way to balance this. Everyone has strengths but we also have things we suck at. Making sure a character isn't some supreme overlord allows them to grow. I mean, if they are already the top of the top, then what else is there to do? Even superheroes have their weaknesses.

So yeah, again I've been there, done that, I've tried to stop myself from doing the Mary Sue bit, and I am not embarrassed when I am called out on it. I am also not saying don't create unique characters. Far from it, but look at who you make objectively. I find looking at other people's characters, going through ideas with players/gms, and gathering information is a good way to make sure that everyone gets to play who they want and no one is the "best".

Boy I like to rant. Just, this person irritates me to no end. I don't like playing with her but she seems to be in every game I join (no she's not on here).
