how about crows (or ravens, whatever, almost the same thing)
they make great pets
they can remember faces
they can use tools
they're almost sapient
they're like bird monkeys

but hell, the thing i like the most about them is that when you pray to any god for a request, they're the only things that they will grant the ability to blow everything the fuck up in 69 jiggatons out of all the living creatures on earth
that's equivalent to the sun, if not greater or lesser
