Much like what [@Mr Allen J] said where you work together to write up a post. For a big event or critical situation it can really help as you're not waiting hours for a reply off someone, but instead have it as part as your post.

My issue was that everyone else was collaborating and I wasn't, so I never felt like I was a part of that cool action everyone was writing about.

This is not to say collabs are bad, I just didn't enjoy them when they we're used so often.
