At home, he was addressed as Li Shang, but outside the Lim household his Caucasian school-mates knew him as Lincoln. He had strict parents, who were not uncompromising, though as a child he was certainly not spared the rod when he had been naughty. The familial discipline motivated him to work hard in school, and the appraising looks he received from his mother and the claps on the back from his father invigorated him to keep his nose to the grindstone. Li Shang excelled especially in Mathematics and Science. According to his mother, he took a keen interest in astronomy when he was seven and while this would explain the telescope that sits hidden by shadow in the corner of his childhood bedroom, Li Shang cannot remember much of what he learned about celestial bodies and their movement – though every now and then he does take out the telescope to star-gaze. There was a boy he was friends with in school, who dubbed him L-Cube, on account of the triple L's that made his name an alliteration, and who entertained his more whimsical thoughts when it came to science and the boundaries that remained to be pushed. Li Shang had always seemed to walk in two worlds – one of which he was the only resident in – but Geoffrey could somehow bear it when Li Shang faded out of conversation to fiddle with some project of cogs and loose gears. For that – and the intellectual stimulation Geoffrey could provide as a sparring partner – Li Shang appreciated him. Even if his social network was not particularly expansive, Li Shang’s efforts paid off when he graduated top of his class and valedictorian in high school. He then went on to study in the University of Pennsylvania, going into medicine. And while he never got into trouble with his impulses to tinker with the human body and its organic components, such urges still existed, and he turned them to more mechanical subjects that wouldn’t bleed or complain if he happened to strike a wrong nerve or wire. He thus divided time, resources, and attention between these two commitments, attending lectures by day and burning the midnight oil cramming in revision while creating gadgets from scratch. Perhaps he was a mad scientist or an inventor at heart, but his parents didn’t complain after he returned home with a medical degree and could still fix up the malfunctioning toaster for them. Just his luck, though, for Li Shang to leave school just in time for the outbreak to hit. His family heard the announcements advising against panic, and call-to-arms on the radio, packed right on up, and drove the 33 miles to the facility before they could reconsider leaving their lives behind. His parents and brother brought their clothes and sentimental memorabilia; Li Shang took his tool-kit. And some clean underwear and clothes because his mother insisted it, whacking him by the side of his head when he tried to convince her otherwise. At the base, they were some of the first uninfected to arrive and station themselves firmly there, not needing a second morning to begin transitioning into a new Spartan lifestyle of rations. Li Shang’s deftness with technology enabled him to gain a reputation as a handyman of sorts. When he was not training his fitness and swiftly learning how to operate firearms, he was approached by strangers forced into this new community for help with anything that resembled engineering. And even though he was plagued by doubts, he proposed to (what passed for) the management in the base patents and programmes that would improve surveillance and security on the perimeter. He proved himself a useful enough asset, and was issued a tablet to keep tabs on the system.
Personality:
Li Shang is far from what you might call a people-person. In school, he was only notable by his grades, and his accompanied silence in classes and the hallway. When he was a boy, he was quiet. As a teenager and beyond he was downright stoic. He frequently comes across as emotionless and cold. As a man who enjoys observation and taking apart the smallest of details, few things do slip by Li Shang. However, one of these few things might often be emotions. One would be hard-pressed to find Li Shang unoccupied with a tablet in a corridor or holed up in a room somewhere, and while his mind is busy with technology he may be blind to the finer nuances of human feelings and tact. However, pry the screen and keyboard from between his fingers, and force him into conversation, and you might find an intuitive listener in him. Results vary, however. You might instead inadvertently incite a snarky, sassy Li Shang, and no one doth desire that. Li Shang may be reticent and few of words, but he is hardly unintelligent, and his tongue is sharp enough to be considered a weapon. One of Li Shang’s priorities will always be his family however. Raised to be filial, he is incredibly respectful and grateful to his parents for always having provided for him as a child, and is especially doting, patient and protective with his younger brother Jun Jie. With his family, he can relate quite well, and only for them will he slide his gadgets away to converse or share a meal. The outbreak has not affected Li Shang tremendously. As a 23-year-old he was well-adjusted before it happened and since he did not lose those dearest to him, he took well to life in the training facility. It was a change in lifestyle, but he continued to be surrounded by his tech. The two most important aspects of his life did not leave his side, and he has lived well and truly safe behind the thick walls of the base. The only difference is that he feels his role as protector of the family – as the most able male – has taken on new meaning and severity, in the face of this unprecedented threat of risen dead.
Appearance:
Standing at 185cm (6’) and weighing 64kg (141lbs), Li Shang has a relatively average figure: slightly trim, but lean rather than bulky with muscle. His mother used to boast to her friends in her mah-jong club that her son carried an enigmatic air of sophistication about him. Whether or not this is true, or simply maternal exaggeration, Li Shang can neither confirm nor deny. However, his posture is admittedly impeccable. With brown eyes that are so dark he used to stare into a mirror and call them black, Li Shang can come across as incredibly somber. Jet black hair aids in making him appear incredibly brooding, though in all honesty his facial expressions alone usually succeed in doing so. His eyebrows are thick slashes that are often furrowed in deep contemplation. Lanky, Li Shang is relatively strong; ever since arriving at the base, he has taken to lifting weights, under the conviction that he must now protect his family.
Strengths & Weaknesses:
Li Shang is not easily distracted. Often with his attention entirely fixated on a goal or his role, he does not entertain anything that would make him lose focus. On the flipside however this can make him inflexible, and poor at multitasking, if he must keep his fingers in two very different pies. But when he does devote himself to a project, he will do so with surprising vigour and energy, often investing all of himself in seeing the task to fruition. He is the definition of a hard worker, but he is relatively clueless when it comes to emotions or romance. He will however brave through the storm if he must, and try his best at engaging with his conversational partner. However, if he is not taking pains to be personal Li Shang would be absolutely shite at relating with another. The opinions of others do not often plague him, and that can make him impersonal to the point of rudeness. If not conscientious of filtering his speech, he will likely offend someone, and not feel remorse about it, making him a famously poor choice for company.
Former Occupation:
Student; Part-time inventor
Family:
Parents: Wang Lindo (Mother, 45) and Desmond Lim (Father, 48). Both live on the base. Siblings: Lim, Jun Jie Jared (Brother, 15). Lives on the base, has an affinity for literature and the humanities.
