It wasn't common, but it happened. In Europe, it was normal to use a sword accompanied by a parrying dagger, for example. Also literally everything I said about wizards still stands. Dual wielding happened in real life; you can't complain about that being unrealistic and keep wizards. And furthermore, D&D is as vanilla high fantasy as it gets.
