Thoughts on this? I'm able to rework it if you need. Is that power okay? He always did well in school (when he actually turned up), and he did a lot of reading at home, when he had the opportunity. He's also very industrious and has a great work ethic, having worked on a farm for the last eight years. Okay, now all of his redeeming qualities are out of the way, let's move on to the list of reasons why teachers, police and all other figures of authority in town hate him with a passion. People think Cole is a bad kid. He's not really a bad kid. Well, not entirely. He's always understood the rules, he's just never cared enough to follow them. He was that kid at the back of the class playing with a flip-knife and giving others intimidating looks. He's hotheaded. There have been multiple occasions where somebody, for one reason or another, has initiated a negative encounter with Cole. Let's just say people don't usually make that mistake twice. He is confrontational and unfriendly. He smokes. He drinks. He fights. It wouldn't be unusual to be afraid of someone like Cole, but that doesn't mean he's a total piece of shit. Few people would be regarded by Cole as 'friends', but he shows a completely different side of himself to those who are. He's kind, caring... a good human being. But only to those who deserve it. Every bit of loyalty, honesty and respect that a person invests in Cole, Cole will return - the same goes for the reverse, however. If you treat Cole like shit, expect a broken nose. People don't think he has a caring side, but that's just because Cole has never had (or wanted to have) the opportunity to show it. If he had to save the life of an enemy, he would. Thankfully he's never had to save a life. He's got a formidable shell, one that he will open to close friends. But why would you try to open said shell if the journey to opening it is like playing with fire?
|History|
Cole spent the first two years of his life in Seattle where his parents, Donovan and Jennifer, had met a good few years before his conception. He was neglected and mentally abused a great deal as a young boy as his parents rarely cared for him, both spending most of their time doing hard drugs and partying. His father was jailed when Cole was only two years old after an alleged murder involving a drug dealer, which meant that Cole does not have any real memories of his father as he has not since attempted to visit him. Following Donovan's incarceration, Cole's mother fell in to a deep depression. Cole isn't sure, but he's heard rumours that she tried to kill herself twice, failing both times. She continued to abuse herself with drugs, but actually started caring for Cole a little. She clearly loved him, but she had no idea how to be a mother. When Cole was only seven, she took him to her brother, Geoff, who owned a farm by the town of Verona, WA. She left him there and never returned. To this day nobody knows where she went, or if she's still alive. Geoff and his wife, Judith, raised Cole alongside their own son, Nathan, as if he was their own. Cole and Nathan formed a strong, brother-like bond as they learned how to run the farm together. Cole loved his aunt and uncle very much, but part of him couldn't help but feel they would never love him as much as they loved Nathan. He still cherished the time he spent on the farm, however, as not only did he become a superb farmhand, but he also learned a great deal, as Aunt Judith taught him on evenings and gave him books to read. Cole's bad side really came out when he attended middle school, and later high school. Although he was very intelligent, mostly thanks to Aunt Judith, he struggled to pay attention and was often the target of teachers' anger. In middle school he was a social outcast and struggled to make friends. Initially, this made him shy and lonely, but, as time passed and he hardened, he was less of a weird loner, and more of an intimidating one. He made one or two good, close friends, both of which were in to drugs and alcohol. He hadn't really been exposed to this side of growing up, but, with the help of his friends, by the time he was 15, he was hooked on a lot of things that 15 year olds really shouldn't be. Now at age 17 he has accumulated a reputation of a bad ass. He still has his very tight knit group of friends that he gets high with, but aside from that he's on his own. He wants to drop out of high school, but Aunt Judith begged him to finish it, so he complied. Aunt Judith still has hope for him, despite his numerous encounters with the law. He just wants to get it done so he can work full-time on the farm. But maybe that's not the way it'll work out. Last night he woke up with voices in his head.
|Family|
Verona, WA:

Geoff & Judith Gibbs, maternal Uncle & Aunt-in-law, 47 & 51: The closest thing to parents that Cole has. Ever since he was left on their farm a decade ago, they've looked after him. Geoff is a hard working man, running the farm and doing the majority of the work - his work ethic has rubbed off on Cole, and he is grateful. Judith runs things in the house, having three grown men to look after - she is very intelligent and has taught Cole some important life lessons. The three have a strong mutual love. Status: Both alive.
Nathan Gibbs, maternal Cousin, 15: Like a little brother to Cole. Except without the rivalry. They've always got on really well, but, because of Cole's habits, the two haven't seen too much of eachother recently. Status: Alive.
Some place else:

Donovan Coleman, Father, 44: Son of an Irish immigrant. He and Jennifer, Cole's mother, had been high-school sweethearts who never quite got together, but had several flings over the years. Eventually, they decided to make it permanent when they discovered that Jennifer was pregnant. Only two years later, with Cole only an infant, Donovan was charged with murder after killing a local drug dealer. He's still in prison to this day. Cole has never made an effort to meet him. Status: Alive, in prison in Seattle.
Jennifer Coleman, Mother, 44: Younger sister of Geoff. God knows where she is. Cole still has plenty of memories of his mother as he spent the first half of his life with her, but he hasn't seen her since the day she dumped him on his uncle's doorstep aged 7. He tells himself he doesn't want to find her, because she's no good, but in reality, he misses her a great deal. She did love him, he knows that, but she was addicted to meth, alcohol, and probably a lot of other shit.
