Thomas waved politely to each of the newcomers in turn. He wasn't really suited to showing people around anyway, and the housekeeper had asked him to stay nearby. Wondering who this new arrival that would need his help would be, he found himself a clear patch of wall to lean on. Closing his eyes, he expanded his focus and immersed himself in the emotional currents of the house. It was something he did often, as it allowed him to be aware of it if anyone was hurt or sad or angry, and thus pass the information along to the caretaker. There was always a pervading sense of sadness in the house, an undercurrent of depression that colored every little feeling that touched him. Adrift in a sea of other people's emotions, Thomas bided his time until the much-awaited newcomer would show up.
