Kakeru is one of the only human crew members on the SKULLKRAKEN, although he isn't completely human. He originated from Japan and is the son of a shinto priestess. He never met his father, but his mother told him that he was an angel from Heaven. No one really believed her until Kakeru began to exhibit supernatural powers. He was able to repeal spirits, ward off demons, and nullify magic. He was training to become the head priest of the temple when his village was attacked by pirates and Kakeru was taken as a hostage. There was said to be a ghost on the ship so they brought Kakeru back to exorcise it, but by the time he was finished, they had already left Japan and were at sea. Kakeru had no other option than to wait until they landed at a port so he could find his way back, but the pirate ship was raided by the SKULLKRAKEN. To his surprise the crew was full of nothing but supernatural creatures, all of which were helpless to his powers. 

But rather than try to kill him, Fenrir, the ship's captain, saw this as an opportunity to make his crew stronger, should they ever run into another supernatural crew. In exchange for not killing him, Kakeru became a member of the SKULLKRAKEN and serves as both a fighter and the ship's cook. He doesn't exactly enjoy being apart of the crew and would not pass up the opportunity to go back to Japan, but after living on the ship for two years, he has formed relationships with the other crew members.
