Canada has a bad track record with their natives. You can catch pretty much any colony-based nation in that same trap, but New Zealand was comparatively mild. There were wars fought between the Maori and the NZers over land, but when those wars were over, the Maori were treated like people and not some nuisance that had to be disposed of.
