That's perfectly fine. It's part of the development of every society that certain ideas fail and others succeed. From your description of the world, with the fading of magic and the advancment in technology, it seemed only logical that there would be people who would focus on natural sciences.
If something happens that will limit that particular field (like the rise of the inquisition during the dark ages), those who chose that path will fail. If that is the fate of my character, so be it. Maybe he (and me) can adept to certain things, maybe not.
