As the water rushed over the monsters blood sap, it hardens and molded into a tougher stronger second bark-skin. 
The two creatures contines to sink into the dark until with a soft thud they hit the river bottom.
Moving quick with familiarity the monster clawed across the floor into an unseen tunnel way that slowly tilted up and led into an above water cavern.

The chamber or beasts lair was pitch black, fully enclosed in the mountain side.
The stench of death seeped through the stale air.
In an alcove on a far rocky wall much scampering could be heard.
