Name: Matthias (surname unknown) Epithet: Hornet. "Hornets are the worst. Once one is in the room, it's hard to find and impossible to catch, and if you're not careful, you'll get a sting you'll never forget." -Matt Age: 18 School Year: Third Gender: M Appearance: Medium height and build. Dark brown hair combed back. Black eyes. Wears a dark blue zip-up jacket, black pants and black combat boots with black gloves. A padded tactical chest and back harness hold spare magazines and a knife. Wears black-lens sunglasses, but only if he actually needs them. Nationality: German-American Personality: Matt is generally reserved and works on his own, but he treats people with respect. If you're friendly, he's friendly. If you're a pain, he's gone. He isn't a loner and doesn't avoid people; he just takes his work seriously, and the people around him could leave one day and never be seen again. For this reason, he has eliminated the prospect of a relationship entirely: when it comes to being an assassin, it's strictly business. When it comes to action, he is reliably level-headed and calm. Brash actions and cockiness are a step away from a bullet to the brain. Expect him to keep a cool head and remain focused. Matt has mixed feelings about violence and killing, and ultimately avoids both if possible. Brutality repulses him, as well as anyone who finds pleasure in it. His Germanic side shows in his discipline in school and efficiency in operations, as well as excellent organizational skills: everything he owns is in its own place and he always knows where everything is. Do NOT move his stuff.
Born to a German father and American mother, Matthias (surname never recovered) was raised in a simple, Christian household. There was never anything particularly special about them; his father worked in an office and his mother stayed home. Matt had not brothers, sisters, aunts, or uncles; his family was almost completely alone. He didn't think much of it, and spent the first few years of public education as an outgoing, friendly kid. One day, Dad didn't come home. He didn't come home the next day. It wasn't until the police arrived to speak to his mother that he learned his father had been killed, shot by a thug trying to mug him. His mother changed drastically, becoming reclusive and silent. He often heard her crying and praying at night for hours, but could never make out the words, and he was too afraid to ask why. School participation and attendance wavered by middle school, and at age 13 he had dropped out entirely to help his mother, who barely left the house anymore. Matt tried to scrape up the money to keep food and power in the house, but success was rare. Two years later, he had almost given up home. Just before he had given up hope, a man in a suit knocked on the door. Without a word, he handed Matt a thick manila envelope, then turned and left. Perplexed, he cut it open and dumped the contents onto the table. The envelope held a letter, along with a driver's license, a passport, and an ID badge to a school he had never heard of. All of them had his photograph and signature, even though he had never seen the picture in his life. The envelope also contained an unlabeled key on a round keychain, tagged "23." The letter read as follows: THIS LETTER WILL DISSOLVE WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF CONTACT WITH ROOM TEMPERATURE AIR. MATTHIAS [REDACTED] YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR ENROLLMENT IN UBIYSTVO KOMANDY, AN EXCLUSIVE SCHOOL FOR THE ELITE. YOU WILL BE TRAINED IN THE ART OF INFILTRATION, PERSUASION, AND EXECUTION, WORKING WITH OTHER STUDENTS, TO BECOME AN ASSASSIN. WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE NEVER KILLED, SO WE ARE OFFERING A PREPOSITION. YOUR EDUCATION WILL BE PAID IN FULL. FURTHERMORE, A PAYMENT OF [$500] WILL BE DELIVERED [monthly] TO YOUR MOTHER FOR SUSTENANCE. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, GO TO BOX 23. YOUR FATHER WOULD HAVE WANTED THIS. -[REDACTED]- The letter evaporated moments after he finished reading it. Matt fell backwards into a chair, stunned. An assassin? A school for assassins? Why on earth would he go there? Who were these people? Should he call the police? So many questions rattled through his mind, but they were overshadowed by the last sentence. "Your father would have wanted this." Whoever these people were, they knew exactly what they were doing. Matt was out of money. No work had appeared for weeks. And it was the only chance to learn what happened to his father. Taking a deep breath, Matt stood up, grabbing everything from the table and stuffing it into his thick blue coat. He thought about telling his mother, but her door was locked. What would he say, anyway? Hands shaking, he wrote a short note and left it on the table, telling her that he was going away for a while for work and would send money if he could. He paused, then went to his room to retrieve a combat knife he had purchased for home defense, back when Dad first disappeared. He knew almost nothing about fighting with it, but it gave him confidence. He grabbed a small book from his desk containing Psalms, Proverbs and the New Testament of the Bible. It had hardly been touched in recent years from bitterness and apathy, but maybe it would be worth reading sometime. Taking one last look around, Matthias left home. The key opened Box 23 at the local post office. Inside was a smartphone, containing instructions on finding the school. It involves more than one transfer between unmarked vehicles and eventually a long flight with a bag over his head. The next two years were a whirlwind of activity as he learned, initially to his disgust but later to his fascination, how to hide, kill, escape, and everything in between. He found a strong interest in technology and working in electronic infiltration. His entire second year revolved around developing a compact EMP/concussion device that fitted around his arm. A few other courses were basic-to-intermediate firearm operation, stealth, and emotional control. He also finally learned proper fighting tactics with a knife, with hand-to-hand combat as an elective, and began skimming through the only book he had brought with him. Proverbs had 31 chapters, and there were a maximum of 31 days per month, so he tried to read one a day. It didn't interest him at first, but through discipline he made it a part of his routine. The rest of the book was ignored. As for his reason for enrollment and the loss of his father, neither concerned him early on as he was hurled into the world of a private university. Only recently in his senior year did he begin his investigation with a formal request to the administration. They approved, but to avoid overwhelming him in his last year, they began sending him new information over time. The first packet arrived today.
Weapon: -UMP45 with a foregrip, mounted laser, and suppressor. Neon combat sights for aiming in the dark. 30-rnd box magazine. Carried on a 3-point sling in combat and in a messenger bag on his back in public. -Combat Knife: About 8" long, thick and painted flat black to eliminate glare/shine). Carried in a nylon sheath to eliminate the sound of it being drawn. Limited by inability to throw it accurately. Equipment: -PHILE (Portable Hacking Instrument for Local Electro-warfare). Small phone-size device that can remotely hack any circuit-based technology. Limited by battery life (about 10 hours) and distance to target (about 15 feet). -Impact Cannon: Fires a large shock wave from a device attached to his forearm. It hits everything in front of it within 30 feet with the force of a car. It can also fire an EMP wave that destroys electronics, lights, and anything else with a battery. Limited by need for a battery (it uses one per shot and he only carries two. Can be charged using a station in his room). -Low-profile infrared/electromagnetic/surface-penetrating glasses. Allow him to identify heat and electronic signatures in complete darkness, even through surfaces. Limited by need to be within a few feet of a surface. -Quick-release ACOG scope for medium to long-range combat. Skills: -Instinct: Can detect threats, attacks, or surveillance from other people. Limited by lack of "super speed" and can only react as quickly as a person. -Hand-to-hand/short blade proficiency: Self explanatory. Expert at close-range combat. -Magnetic Grip: Can grasp surfaces with palms and boot treads, letting him climb walls. He can also use it to break a fall by gripping a wall before hitting the ground. The grip is silent: no loud 'CLANG' when he uses it. Limited by only being able to face upwards using it (no gripping a wall sideways or face-down, so he can't climb on a ceiling) and by body strength (it's like climbing normally: it can wear you out if you don't take a break). Talents: -Invisibility: Can become completely invisible for a short time. Anything he is already wearing or carrying becomes invisible as well. Limited by any noise he may make, and he still leaves a heat signature. Other: Mainly medium and close-range combat is a disadvantage against long-range weapons, but his skills and talents get him close enough to handle the situation and neutralize the target. He's also tidy, both on and off missions, to the point that he cleans up spent ammunition casings to eliminate evidence.
