Maddox
Date of Birth
April 19, 1993
Gender
Male
Sexuality
Homosexual; Closeted
Occupation
Lawyer, Former Paralegal Emerson only recently got his name on the wall and the credibility and resources that comes with such a promotion. He's nothing if not excited by this wonderful new opportunity afforded to him.
In-Depth Appearance
Emerson takes a unique sort of pride in his dress; someone once told him at a young age that the clothes make the man...might've been from a movie...either way it was something he took to heart. He's almost always in a suit and tie, and not just because the nature of his occupation demands one look like a professional at damn near all times. Freshly tailored, never wrinkled, and with playful cufflinks to show that he's not entirely serious, that he can have a laugh...even if it's more forced than genuine. The only thing more slick than Emerson's words (in his own mind, anyway) is his hair which, while well maintained, always seems to make him look even less sincere than lawyers typically look. While he doesn't treat his body as a temple or anything of the sort, Emerson keeps active with a simple routine to stay in shape while still being able to indulge in some unhealthy vices. He often believes himself to be more toned than he is, the kind of person who will flex in the bathroom mirror even if they don't exactly have anything to flex, exactly. Emerson comes off as more conventionally 'handsome' than anything more or less, and that's just good enough as far as he's concerned. He'd like to be taller, but at six foot nothing he'll take what he has. His eyes, hazel in color, are often narrowed in a would-be smoldering gaze but in actuality has Emerson looking as if he's always plotting something or saying the opposite of what he means; and to be fair that's fairly often the case. He hasn't quite mastered the art of subtlety when it comes to facial expressions. Though he goes to great lengths to always come off as professional and presentable, often times he'll forget about that little thing known as facial hair and more often than not he'll have five o'clock shadow only because he did a poor job at shaving. Electric razors, always a crapshoot.

Who Am I?
| Personality | ♦ Opportunistic ♦ Sleazy ♦ Motivated ♦ Passionate ♦
While the common joke is that no one likes lawyers until they need them, when it comes to Emerson...he's a hard person to like eveb before getting to the whole career aspect. Emerson likes to think he is far more charming than he actually is, with seemingly slick quips and one liners bordering less on the 'charming and funny' and more on the 'cringe worthy and off putting', be they his attempts at entendre or his legitimate attempts at making a joke. Emerson doesn't seem to have tact, or at least doesn't seem to care one way or another; on more than one occasion he has made off hand remarks about someone's physical appearance - like a celebrity or the secretary - and rather than it being the ice breaker with a client or co-worker, it's more gross than anything else. Though he's not the greatest when it comes to small talk or the like, he's still quite competent at both getting and working cases and clients. He might not be the suave man he pictures himself as, but he's great at digging up arguments and defenses for the legal team going to court, something that he hopes continues now that he's among that very same team. He takes his career seriously due to the effort it took him to worm his way into such a position, but Emerson is someone that is content with playing the long game. Eventually an opening will happen and Emerson takes his shot even if that means jumping off the backs of other people. No one said lawyers had to make friends with the people they work with. Emerson is the kind of person you wouldn't call up to grab a beer or anything, but on that same token he's not someone that people are likely to forget, if only to share stories about how 'utterly creepy that guy is'. As a child his grades were adequate, but he was nowhere near the top of the class and that wasn't good enough for a Maddox. His parents weren't exactly wealthy or anything, with his father being a sous chef at a highly regarded restaurant and his mother a dental assistant, but still they expected Emerson to achieve higher than they had and anything less was simply not good enough. By the time he entered his teenage years, Emerson had no idea what he wanted to do with his life only that he had a hunch that whatever it was would still not be good enough for parents who showed affection in the most passive manner possible. The only reason Emerson decided to try his hand at law school was because he thought he looked good in a suit and tie and a regular office job would no doubt be seen as not good enough. Emerson did so care about appearances and what people thought of him, of course. Of course, because Emerson just wasn't good enough, he became stuck as a paralegal, seen as nothing more than an assistant to the actual lawyers by those not in the know. He still got to wear a tie to work, but rather than going to trial and being the supposed defender or prosecutor that saved the day in the end, he was stuck pouring through files and cases and doing the work that lawyers then went on to use. Emerson saw his position as an obstacle to overcome and suffered silently for years until the opportune moment. When the firm was looking for another name to put on the wall, Emerson made his move, throwing fellow coworkers under the bus while presenting his case as to why he would make a better lawyer than his peers. That he managed to secure a client by constantly showing up to the hospital and wearing him down was seen not as scummy and wrong by the associates but the marks of a man that would fit well with the team. And so Emerson Maddox wormed his way into being a lawyer, where his own brand of worminess would serve him well. With the recent revelation of the Other community and the panic that came with it, Emerson sees yet another opportunity to make himself stand out. Many humans are afraid of Others and there's bound to be plenty of people that seek legal action against the creatures that so long existed only in the realm of fantasy. If the Others want to live among humans, then the human law should apply to them, and Emerson will happily play both sides so long as he gets his in the end. And that'll be good enough.
Family
Michelle Maddox - Emerson's mother. Works as a dental assistant and will do so until she gets tired of rooting around in people's mouths for a living. She's never outwardly said it, but she's proud of Emerson for sticking with the legal path even through the worst times. She has no opinion on the Others, she just wants to live the rest of her life in relative peace. Perhaps by moving to a nicer country once retirement sets in. Paul Maddox - Emerson's father. Worked in the highly competitive field of fine dining as a sous chef before settling into the far less stressful field of being front of house, handling reservations and things of that nature. There's a bit of a rocky relationship between him and his son, but in Paul's eyes every push he gave Emerson was what shaped him into the man he is today. For better or for worse.
