Taking away the bravado, there isn’t much to dispute that claim— Murdock has staunch experience with small craft airplanes, helicopters, construction vehicles, and motorcycles. Whilst he is not as skilled as Baracus in more forward ground vehicles he is a good option is needed to be their #2 driver. Generally if it can be driven, piloted, or sailed Murdock can figure it out well enough to consistently evade pursuit. Soldier: It comes to no surprise that Murdock is a skilled soldier given his experience in the armed forces— he’s a crack shot, skilled in CQC, is tactically intelligent, and has been conditioned to be a soldier since he was young. Genius Intelligence: Previous commanders have cited Murdock’s intelligence being “ridiculous” in scope, a fact that is reinforced given his comprehensive understanding, adept skills at acting a part, knowledge of the morse code, and his memorization of several languages and histories from multiple cultures. It’s presumed he has a photographic memory, but it’s hard to say for sure.
| PERSONALITY: |
Murdock is a notorious personality with a reputation for his eccentric and esoteric ways of looking at situations, though while some previous commanders cited it as “outside of the box” thinking others simply viewed it as “insane, eccentric behavior that are incompatible with any unit”. Whichever the case may be, Murdock gets the job done even if he adds a bit quirk in how he does it and interacts with his fellow soldiers. There is often debate that if Murdock is actually unfit for service or if he’s just channeling the appearance of a madman to get a dismissal— and really it is difficult to say one way or the other due to how he reacts in one situation and then another. But if you ask Murdock if he believes he is crazy he will just tell you that insanity is just a state of mind; a comment that is either concerning or amusing. Madness aside, Murdock is a good soldier and a particularly moral individual if you put his eccentric quirks aside. He values the liberties of others and is eager to help the less than privileged in a situation even if there seems to be little logic in joining the fight. During his time on the squad following their vigilante activities he has stood up for the homeless, the disabled, and others where they could not for themselves which even Baracus has admitted is the “sanest” behavior Murdock has ever given. But Murdock will often do the sanest thing in the most insane fashion, of course. Murdock is generally jovial and enjoys the lighter things in life— cartoons, comic books, making light of bad scenarios, impressions of characters from various art media, absurdist humor, and loud hectic laughing. However these tendencies to be “the living embodiment of a cartoon character” does put him at odds with some of his squadmates and the people they help with these people often looking like Murdock like he’s drug-addled or an alcoholic. But neither is the case in reality. Murdock is just… Murdock.
| BACKGROUND: |
Henry “Howling Mad” Murdock was born in an upper class neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland during the winter of 1978. The third of a bundle of six, Henry’s childhood was one of which where he had to stand out from the youngest and eldest siblings that he was surrounded by. Though Henry’s family was affluent, Henry was always the “odd duck” of the Murdock family— a fact he would embody later in life. Stories of Henry’s childhood changes periodically; varying on who in specific he is talking to. If Henry is legitimately insane there could be a variety of reasons for this— and if he isn’t it is clear that he isn’t comfortable with the events that went on. However, what is known as far as the facts are concerned is that Henry was mentored by his uncle, James Murdock, an entrepreneur and aviation enthusiast who started up his own aviation company that has serviced privately and publicly since 1961. The line can be drawn that Henry’s initial interest in piloting can be attached to these experiences with his uncle. Joining up with the military at the age of eighteen, Henry found his previous experience and fascination with piloting led to a successful career flying military jets and helicopters for the government’s armed forces. Eventually he found himself speeding through training and becoming a prominent member of the Thunderbirds. It was with this role in the group that Henry would refine his abilities as a trick pilot that would lead to his future handling of aircraft that would lead to several unorthodox runs that would save lives in his succeeding military career. Following 9/11, the Thunderbolts-era for the young man was over. He was transferred over and somehow found himself assigned as a helicopter pilot over his experience as a jet pilot— the reasons of why aren’t exactly concrete. But what is factually known is that Henry started his career as a helicopter pilot over the skies of Iraq and Afghanistan in 2001. Eventually, Henry was assigned to a special operations team after proving is skill and finesse as a pilot during the war. His “eccentric” personality aside, he was transferred and found himself an undeniable asset to the team. Henry found his personality turning some of his squad-mates off but in the end they recognized his abilities made his “eccentric” tendencies to be tolerable. Henry stuck around with the squad even after the squad’s dismissal and a supposed indictment. His commander promised him that his name would be cleared and they escaped from captivity.
