My two cents here.

To be honest one of the most effective ways i have seen to stop a bot is simply ask the new user to perform an open ended answer task before joining, such as "write us an rp sample, or just tell us about yourself". Chances are, spambots are nowadays too stupid to write coherent sentences who are not made of rehashed words.
