"i'm just being friendly," she defended herself, staring at her nails like they were the most absorbing thing she'd seen all week. fauna popped up again like a literal kernel once shawn spoke, however. "quirks, he says! shawny's got them too. he never stops touching his hair, for example!" her tone, while louder than usual, simply sounded amused rather than the accusatory tone she was going for. to build off of her little speech, fauna quickly moved forward, aiming to bat a lock of hair into his face. "see, look, he'll do it again. trust me." what was more entertaining than waiting to see whether her hypothesis was true was watching nicoletta, apparently; fauna stared with intrigued eyes while nico decoded atlantis's words (although she still had no clue what exactly was running through the italian's mind; she was much less intuitive than the rest of her teammates). the only thing she could tell was that the new kid seemed entranced by what was happening around here, almost dreaming in the middle of her very exuberant peers. fauna almost felt it necessary to shake nicoletta from her stupor, until she realised there was faint pinkish-redness rising to the girl's cheeks. adorable. nicole had pale skin for the ancestry fauna assumed she had, so it was easy to tell when rosacea was rising to the surface. the only question was, what was the source of this little blush? bemused, fauna tilted her head to place it in front of nicole's gaze again once it'd been averted. ah, wait. she realised suddenly that it could likely be the fact that she was completely invading nicoletta's personal space, and only retracted herself slightly by pulling her head back. then again, it could also be that shawn was a conventionally attractive kid and this camp had likely received yet another straight girl who he was being generous towards. probably. more importantly, newbie was talking again. "nicole! how darling. don't worry! usually, i just pretend she's not there," fauna reassured her, jerking away from tis as if she was afraid she'd get hit for the offhand comment. "i vote you call her boss, actually. i'd need no other entertainment for the rest of the summer." her voice hinted at laughter, but she made no move to address the rules. for one, if there were any, she had no idea what they were - not only had fauna never looked through the pamphlets or handouts that reception handed out at the start of every summer, but she'd never made a move to regard rules that were usually just common sense and didn't need to be written. for instance, 'no looking through other campers' personal belongings,' or 'no stealing snacks from the mess hall at three in the morning,' et cetera. she left that question up to either tis or shawn - they were far more suited to answering it, however tempted fauna was to fake some dumb rules and try to play nicoletta into following them. that sounded just a little too mean for her first day, but the imagery brought a faint smile to her face. 'hey, nicole, make sure to stop by those cabins with the blue flags... they've got all the supplies a newbie needs!' cue a bunch of pissed "royal blues" and a likely bewildered nicoletta. fauna took the opportunity to memorise the newcomer's profile once she'd turned for a handshake with the leader, and just as quickly, nicole turned to give her a seemingly manufactured smile. not that fauna took very much notice of the slight artificiality. nonetheless, nicole was speaking, albeit in a foreign language that fauna had to lean closer to grasp even the gist of it. she could make out only little parts of the phrase, and, at that, only the proper nouns: 'italian,' 'geneva,' 'california.' it seemed like an obvious enough string, even if fauna didn't have the skill to decipher nicoletta's words in their entirety. she didn't need to, though - nicole soon paraphrased her own words in english and followed up with a question of her own, and then, praise god, french. fauna's mother was an american woman somewhat obsessed with french culture, so she was born in paris (stereotypically enough) before they were transferred off to canada. it felt natural, still, to hear french being spoken, and despite nicoletta claiming not to be entirely fluent in the language, her accent was well-done. fauna showed her pride through a beaming smile, the corners of her mouth slowly raising as the language flowed from the newcomer's lips. "la vache!" she whispered adoringly once nicoletta was through, expressing herself through some childish idiom - its literal meaning was a tad confusing, but in this case was meant only as an expression of surprise (and not, as most non-natives would believe, just fauna yelling about a cow). "les bras m'en tombent..." translated, 'i am stunned,' and truly one didn't need to know french to see it in fauna's expression, considering she stared at nicoletta like the girl was some great gift. realising only now it was unlikely that anyone understood her, she straightened up, giving her full attention again as nicoletta continued with her response. something about the new green's modest way of speaking was endearing, and fauna looked at shawn and tis with a face that read something along the lines of you seein' this? we're truly blessed, in more or less words. the compliment earned a theatrical little faux swoon from fauna, who brushed the back of her hand against her forehead and sat back dreamily. "oh, tis, she's too kind. can we keep her?" fauna laughed, looking at their beach-blonde leader with newly brightened eyes. "oh, where is everyone else, we've got to show you off; a multilingual newbie, no less! can you believe it...." she rambled in a gradually more quiet voice as she looked around the room and finally her gaze landed on one half of the beauchamp twins, looking all by his lonesome without any greens around him. or his brother, at that. she had to remind herself that nathan was the green one before calling out: "nate-nate-nate, get off your phone and get over here; you have first impressions to make and you're not doing so well, sir." fauna didn't seem to notice the fact that there was a good few feet between them, but still not enough to warrant the sudden volume her voice took on. still, she waved a hand in the air and used the other to gesture toward nicoletta as if she were a gameshow host presenting a prize. maybe i should say something... truthfully, oli was so captivated by the sudden shift in aura from ariel that he might not have noticed the grandiose entrance of yet another camper, but said camper announced his arrival rather loudly - hard to ignore that. everyone, everyone, calm down! well, oliver considered himself calm a moment ago, but with the exciting newcomer he felt slightly less calm. while the queen has arrived, there is no need to stop what you're doing! curiously, oli took a quick gander around, realising that some people closest to the doorway had indeed paused fiddling with their devices and chatting to give this kid their attention. he had a sneaking suspicion, however, that this was not because the new arrival was 'the queen'; moreover that he was so loud, he interrupted all things happening around him. it was a pretty good method, admittedly. continue on, my peasants, continue on. and they did, as if actually under his command. oliver would have been annoyed if... well. if he didn't find this kid so adorable. he had a babyface to rival oli's, and that was a feat on its own. rather embarrassed at the thought - they cropped up pretty commonly among kids his age, sure, but oliver hadn't exactly come to terms with the fact that he could experience romantic feelings or fancy at all - he bowed his head, pretending to be entranced by the now-wilting dandelion in his hand while the queen passed behind his chair. he was curious... "who's —" oliver cut himself off, thanking god his voice was already naturally inaudible, and raised his eyebrows hesitantly. better not show interest around these people. stomping on said spark of interest and subsequently forcing it from his mind entirely, oliver tuned back in to what was happening within the group. jackson rambling, apparently, about something he couldn't exactly understand since he hadn't been listening the entire time, and then elijah. eli wasn't actually speaking, but there was something oli couldn't quite put his finger on that went off in his expression. since when...? mentally replaying the scenes thus far, terified that he'd been the cause of this sudden shift, oliver took a third-person perspective in his own mind to watch his short-term memory. no, this had happened when 'ghost' came sliding in to the picture. oli didn't bother hiding the fact that he was scrutinizing eli and instead stared for a long moment, eyes concentrated, to try and find the specific disturbance. ah, eyebrows. the tale-teller of all facial features. anyone else who wasn't absolutely obsessed with trying to read people's mind through their body language likely would have glazed over it, but oli felt triumphant for taking notice, given how subtle eli seemed to be in all that he did. still, it was a wonder why he was upset now. the group appeared to be fairly close-knit, and if that truly was the case, there was no need to be anything but happy (since the gang was all here)... strange. the not-so-subtle chuckle, though, gave off a little more implication, and then the half-assed welcome that followed even moreso. oliver avoided looking directly at eli after that, afraid of becoming the next incarnation of the coldly-spoken alex. i want everyone to pull out their phones and text their buddies to get here in about fifteen minutes so we can get these introductions out of the way. yet another spike of heartrate. oliver twisted rather dramatically to look at the source, only to find an adult. guy looked like a damn celebrity, and he dressed like he had the ego of one, too. he looked round at his new team to figure out what reaction he should have to this man, what ideas should be put into his head regarding him, but it seemed his teammates were unperturbed by the full-grown adult in a room of teenagers. obviously it was a counselor of some sort, but oliver was still disconcerted somewhat. overreacting, he reminded himself, and twirled the dandelion again absently to ground himself. it'd been plucked from the ground so long now that it looked half-dead, and oliver realised just how much time he'd wasted not figuring out what his wish would be. this was, clearly, a very serious matter. attempting to be sneaky about his business, oli pivoted slightly away from the rest of the group, raising the dandelion to his lips and shutting his eyes. asking for a good summer felt too general, and too much to ask of a simple flower. asking for, dunno, that cute boy-"queen" to talk to him felt a little shallow, and a waste of his wish lest that kid be as arrogant as he sounded. so, oli did the first thing that came to mind after those, and wished the blonde who'd given him the dandelion good luck. he blew until every single wisp floated away in one attempt, and he was surprised at the semi-miracle (although it's more likely that they only did so because the flower'd been dying for so long). oliver had something of a rampant tongue once he got comfortable with his company. seeing as he was fairly comfortable with the grey team now (and, to a lesser extent, any outside intruders present), he was prone to saying whatever came to mind at this point. heavy compulsions, second-strongest to his everlasting obsessions. in any case, his next comment was entirely unwarranted, and he was holding his free hand out to catch the wisps of dandelion hair now falling through the air - a gentle sight contradictory to his biting words. "he looks like a douchebag," he spat harshly, in regards to the man who'd most recently spoken, someone he didn't know as mr. "danny" hill. it took him a moment to realise thar wasn't just a mental insult, and he slowly looked up from his gathering of wisps, sitting back against the table's edge until it dug into his spine. "oh, jesus. i - i mean - who is that?" oli shuddered, hearing auditory self-accusations fill his mind. he had a habit of deceiving himself, believing situations worse than they actually were, and this felt like actual hell. even worse if he had a chance of being overheard, though that was unlikely; it was just another case of personal deception.
