[@Arawak]The mats are all independent conciousnesses, however the critters are inextricably linked to their host mat.  Each critter has an independent personality, however this personality is constantly being influenced by the goals and desires of the mat they consume.  So the mat is both a single will and a president, but generally all critters will share it's personality to some extent.
