I would actually see that as a bit much in terms of a change to serve as a call to action. Honestly, you had it all right there, you could have played a daring side of him creeping up in the midst of his new freedom-body mind and soul. It doesn't always have to be traumatic and compromise the character. His goodness yet reckless nature could be what motivates him to help people. To stand as a public display of grit and strength for the transgender community in a particularly dangerous line of work.
