The Start of a New Dream

A light coating of white covered the ground as a young man in a black jacket walked along a path through the woods. The only sounds that could be heard within the trees was the sound of crisp leaves under boots and snow, the rare creature scurrying across branches, and the humming of the clearly out of tune young man. “Whew,” Daniel sighed as he looked up towards the bright sun, “lovely day for a walk, though there is a limit to how long the lovely bit can hold. Especially if I have to keep trudging through the woods for an hour.” After giving his peace, leaving the last few words to deflate into a grumble, he turned towards his temporary traveling companion. “I told you already kid” the satyr walking a few steps behind replied, “camp isn’t much farther. Why does it even matter, be happy, the last time I came through here some campers got attacked, consider yourself lucky.” “Kid? This coming from the humanoid goat?” Daniel jested, a smile crossing his face. Despite his dark clothing, his various ear piercings, and overall dark visual demeanor, Daniel was a surprisingly cheerful person. He claimed it was because he tried to go dark and edgy, and only the look stuck with him. The satyr’s eye twitched for a moment before he proceeded to move ahead of Daniel. “You know what *kid*,” he said, putting emphasis on calling Daniel kid, “how about we get to camp so someone else can enjoy your sense of humor. Maybe you’ll find someone, other than yourself, who thinks you’re funny.” “Really!?” Daniel said with amazement in his voice while quickly jogging up to the satyr, “I’ll find more people who I can talk to?” The satyr just hummed in agreement and the two made their way past a dense thicket of trees. Once they were through Daniel was amazed by what he saw, a pair of pillars straight out of a Greek ruin. As he glanced up he saw a sign that read “CAMP HALF BLOOD”. Daniel proceeded to nearly jump for joy as he ran ahead of the satyr towards the gates. “HEY KID” shouted the satyr, “WAIT UP!” But Daniel didn’t hear him, the blood pumping in his ears, the sound of crushed show, and the excitement running through is blood made him deaf to things around him. It’s seemed to have blinded him too, because once he was ten feet into the camp grounds he managed to trip on something in the snow and fell face first into the ground. Slightly out of breath the satyr caught up to Daniel, who was still lying there. “You… okay… kid?” the satyr said, catching his breath. Daniel, with his face still in the dirt and snow, slowly responded with, “For the love of the various gods, please tell me no one saw that.” As he slowly picked himself up and wiped the dirt off of his face Daniel heard something that sounded like snickering. “Sorry new guy,” a voice from behind said while trying to hold back more chuckles, “I had a pretty nice show there.” the voice walked over to Daniel’s front and offered him a hand. “Got to hand it to you, that was a spectacular entrance.” “Yeah well, I don’t get out much alr---ight” Daniel said looked up towards the hand offered to him, he saw it was a girl, maybe a year younger than him, and that led him to stutter his final word. Daniel was not used to talking to people, and pretty girls were certainly not on the list of things he was used to dealing with. As quickly as he fell Daniel shot up to his feet and hurriedly rubbed his cleave over his face to try to clean off any remains of his embarrassment. “Sooo” the girl said, poking Daniel’s chest, “gonna introduce yourself or what?” “R-r-right, uuuh” Daniel awkwardly stammered, all while the satyr chuckled to himself, “my name’s Daniel, I’m new here, I have no idea what I’m doing, and I just looked like a complete idiot in front of the first person in camp I met.” “Well,” the girl responded, “you’re not wrong.” She proceeded to start chuckling further and Daniel pulled his hood up to try to cover the growing redness in his face. “Only a few more seconds,” Daniel whispered to himself, “only a few more seconds and I can try again…” “What are you talking about?” the girl asked him while tilting her head slightly sideways. She looked to the satyr and repeated, “Seriously, what is he talking about?” The satyr proceeded to walk up to the two and pulled Daniel’s hood off of his head, “Kid here has some kind of magic around him that makes people forget him for a bit. When I was tailing him I’d see people talking to him and then suddenly blink a few times as if they just took a whiff of some catnip or something. Then they’d leave like nothing happened. S’probably why the kid hasn’t ever been attacked, he was under the radar because the radar forgot about him.” “Trust me,” Daniel said still grumbling shyly, “being under your so called radar isn’t that fun when people you talk to everyday can’t even remember your name.” “Aw, poor baby,” the girl said, flicking Daniel’s forehead, “does the invisible boy want to make a friend?” She then proceeded to smile warmly at him, “don’t worry Daniel, there are plenty of other demi-gods here with powers they can’t control. Eventually everyone manages to get enough hold on their powers to keep them from lighting things on fire or punching holes in walls.” “Well, there’s that,” the satyr spoke up, “and the fact that I haven’t forgotten him once since I met him. I think the power doesn’t work as well on mythical beings. You’ve been managing to keep talking to him, so I think demi-gods are able to remember him too.” The satyr proceeded to look at Daniel and smiled, “told ya kid, people here are goin’ to remember you. So don’t do anything stupid, cause everyone’s gonna see.” With that Daniel just looked at the first two people to ever talk to him and actual keep talking to him. He was happy, his frown was quickly growing into a smile, and he then just started laughing while small tears started rolling down his red cheeks. “Can’t make any promises about not screwing up, but hey, getting called out for something by name is definitely something I’m looking forward to.”
