Well if he were the Lead Officer of the Horizon's Sylph pilots he would be entrusted in all things related to the upkeep and maintenance of the craft and training/organization of the other pilots. He would most likely also be very experienced as an engineer for the fighter-craft and would probably spend most of his time, when he's not fighting, fixing ships or attempting to come up with new ways of making the Sylph more efficient.
