It’s naturally a simple chestnut brown, but he frequently dyes it anything ranging from a teal-blue to a cherry-red to a hot pink. He has an undercut and his hair has a slightly curly texture, although it’s so often messy and tucked away under hats that one might not be able to tell. His facial features are very distinct as well, but what stands out first and foremost are his eyes. Josh persistently looks a little tired thanks to apparently inset bags beneath his eyes, a simple caramel-brown colour. His nose slopes easily with a small bump and is generally very feline in shape. Josh seems to always be smiling, an expression that lights up his entire face rather than just one region. His build and height are very separate from one another. He’s very fit and despite not being very into sports, has an athlete’s body - at least when you consider the amount of muscle in his arms. He weighs 160 pounds or around 72 kg. On the other hand, he only stands five feet, seven inches tall, or about 1.70m. What he lacks in height he apparently compensates for in physical strength.

Habits | Quirks | Oddities
¿ Mainly speaking in colours ¿ Stammering over his words when Tyler isn’t with him ¿ Tapping his fingers on the nearest available surface ¿ Picking at paper when he’s bored ¿ Breaking eye contact when disinterested ¿ Examining his food before eating it ¿ Pondering about aliens
Hobbies:
♛ Drawing ♛ Drumming ♛ Sleeping ♛ Eating tacos with Tyler
Likes:
✔ Tacos ✔ Drawing people ✔ Tyler ✔ Josie ✔ Nature ✔ Long walks on the beach (<3) ✔ Cuddles ✔ Cuddling other people (whether they like it or not >:D)
Dislikes:
✘ Bigotry ✘ Social events ✘ Crowds ✘ People shouting ✘ People that try to relate to him when they don’t know anything ✘ The weird looks he gets when he talks in colours ✘ The fact that people look at him weird because he talks in colours ✘ Anyone who insults Tyler ✘ Being under pressure
Fears:
☠ Large crowds ☠ Public speaking ☠ Pressure ☠ His father
Personality: ♦ Impartial ♦ Conservative ♦ Thoughtful ♦ Timid ♦
Josh is a prime example of how badly social anxiety can affect an individual. He tends to introspect so often that he phases out of interactions; unless, of course, his company is someone he considers himself close to. He’s preoccupied with keeping himself in check, making sure he’s not behaving too strangely around others or warding them off some other way on the off-chance that he’s being observed. He overwhelms himself constantly with perfecting his external image, to the point where it’s difficult to fully realise his own personality. All in all, Josh’s self-consciousness fragments him. For all the focus he places on himself, Josh is still surprisingly concerned for his friends. He has amazing intuition when it comes to picking his friends in the first place, and after that, it’s not hard for him to uphold a friendship. Once he builds the initial foundation of trust, his natural charm and generosity keeps people gravitating towards him like a beacon. Josh considers other people to be his highest priority, and instinctively communicates his own personal concerns for their welfare and his willingness to become involved often to ensure they know how deeply he cares. His greatest strength lies in his belief of those nearest to him: he fully recognises his friends’ potential, and never fails to inspire them to achieve it. Despite Josh not being a very confident person himself, he is usually the one to build up others. He is generally good, or at least average, at any of his various undertakings. However, when he does fail at something, he fails hard; say if Josh messes up an art piece that he put a lot of work into, he will immediately regress into a depressive state, and not much can pull him out of it. Living a life surrounded by family that regularly discouraged him has made Josh a little bitter towards his own work, even if he’s done something he would consider good. That said, a lot of his projects are trashed, especially the successful ones that he just grew tired of after any given amount of time. When he’s under a particularly large amount of pressure and literally does not have the option to just give up, Josh simply puts a positive spin on his own failure, to the point where he distorts the truth. It’s not the healthiest way to handle things, admittedly. Josh has the distinct inability to express his own anger or upset, even in response to direct provocation, so he comes off as either completely unemotional or embarrassingly submissive. This is yet another facet of his anxiety: fear of confrontation. If he feels something he does will give him a reason to be disliked, he draws in on himself as if recoiling from danger. Since he’s generally unresponsive, Josh is easily chalked up to just another dumb, directionless kid. In fact, he is anything but. He simply doesn’t care to express his viewpoints and opinions to unhearing ears. Plus, sharing something so personal typically warrants unwanted criticism, and Josh obviously can’t handle something like that. It’s difficult for him to grow accustomed to one place at a time, he’s so flighty. Josh travels a lot and moves, but not in the way most of his peers would; instead of taking occasional trips across the country (hell, across continents) with his family, he’ll take personal impulsive trips to the closest landmark or cinema or beach either by his lonesome or with his best friends just to keep himself from getting bored. He can’t commit to anything for fear of being ‘caged’ or restricted. Josh may seem pretty organized and thorough just because he’s not obviously falling apart at the seams, but he’s actually such a free spirit that he can’t stick to any task for a very long time. There is one exception to how free flowing he is - friendship. Because it’s so hard for him to make friends in the first place, Josh rarely dissolves relationships entirely, and actually works as much as he can to maintain them.

History:
The Nelson family is fairly dysfunctional. Jim Nelson, Josh’s father, abuses alcohol on the regular, and his mother Carla has her own issues with prescription drugs. They are both artists; graphic and freelance, respectively. In spite of their addictions, they are both Christian and forcefully influence their children with their religion. Josh has two sisters and a younger brother. Obviously, his parents’ circumstances don’t make up the best home life. His father regularly goes too far with his alcohol binges, which leads to physical violence towards either Josh himself or his siblings - usually, though, he can find a place to hide all of them before any real damage is done. Being the second-eldest and the most responsible anyway, Josh tends to pick up most of the slack around the house. He intercepts welfare checks for groceries, digs through donations at church to bring home canned goods and food for his siblings, ensures that his mother and his father are completing enough commissions for a fair salary. On the side, he’s picked up drumming, but only when he’s out of the house (usually at a friend’s or at the school’s band reserves). His family shelters him from music to avoid his learning anything too explicit - or, at least, that’s what they say. He has his own theory that the kids don’t get their own individuality. Josh may have learned a degree of cynicism from his parents’ treatment, but he seems to have picked up their artistic skill for himself through painting and drawing. Mostly, he favours the colourful aspect of art. His obsession with colour comes from a disorder called synaesthesia. His official diagnosis was made very early on, around the age of ten. He perceives colours associated with different feelings mostly, but it’s all-encompassing; Josh might even look at a colour and a certain memory or emotion would be evoked. He assigns people to a colour or a spectrum of colour or a gradient - really, it’s a very complicated system, and even he can’t explain how it works. Very few people can match his complex, but when they do, Josh sort of forgets how to communicate his thoughts ‘normally.’ It’s easy for him to slip into a state where the only way he knows to articulate his feelings is by using colour, and that’s where art comes in.

Extracurricular Activities:
N/A
Extra:
[s]DTMWAGT DTMWAGT DTMWAGT DTMWAGT DTMWAGT[/s] I like Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time.
Anything Else:
Has social anxiety and synaesthesia.
