Question about "random event" - does that mean you as the GM choose between catch pokemon and train pokemon, or that we will have a random RP experience? IF it's the latter, I'll forgo catching a new pokemon or training my current one for the RP experience.

Honestly, I think in time My character will know enough about battling to do what he wants to accomplish, so there's no rush to amass more pokemon or strengthen up his starter.
