Would it be alright if Cordonova didn't have a single Pontiff, but rather a few key bishops or like a pontifical council or something? 

Honestly I didn't realize that each nation has their own pontiff when I wrote my post lol. However, on thinking on it, due to Cordonova's nature (made up of six [i]very[/i] different duchies), it might be difficult to elect a single pontiff. Thus, just like the council of the Notables, a more egalitarian measure was conceived.
