The empire was still recovering from the Great War and the Depression surprised many government officials. Soon enough, the government took emergency measures to balance the budget and restore confidence in the pound by issuing an emergency budget, which immediately instituted a round of cuts in public spending and wages. Public sector wages and unemployment pay were cut by 10%, and income tax was raised in the pound. However, these measures were unsuccessful as unemployment rose and the gold standard dropped. After years of measures to combat against the depression, a slow recovery begun in 1934 because of the withdrawal from the gold standard and the devaluation of the pound. As a result, British exports became more competitive on world markets. During that period of recovery, Nazi Germany was born as Hitler took complete control of the country. Then, an revolt against Hitler began and the country fell into chaos. The British were watching from the sidelines as the Royal Freikorps rose to the up while Hitler ran to Austria. Right after the successful coup, the new government of Germany immediately invaded Austria to capture Hitler. The British government called for discussions at Stuttgart to discuss the capture of Hitler; however, the discussion was rejected by the 2rd Imperial German Empire and Austria was annexed into the empire. Within weeks of the Fall of Austria, Czechoslovakia was soon added into the German Empire by force as the German people rebel against the Czechoslovakian government. The British didn't have time to respond to the simulation at the country, because they were already signed an treaty with them. The once powerful British Empire was losing more power as the German Empire took over parts of Poland, Denmark, and Yugoslavia. The Netherlands and Switzerland were completely surrounded as German forces took it in the matter of days. The French government were too afraid to fight against the powerful and ruthless German Empire and gave up the Rhineland. They also left the alliance with the British as the agreement that they would be left alone by them. The Allies were no more and the British had to make a tough decision to let them continue their campaign of terror in Europe. Soon enough, British and Germany officials met in Berlin to sign The Cottbus Agreement. The Cottbus Agreement stated that the United Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland would leave the 2rd Imperial German Empire alone, if they don't attack their colonies, dominions, and the homeland. It was signed right after the Treaty of Washington was also signed. With the fall of the United States of America and the British Empire losing control of Europe, democracy had lost to fascism. With The Cottbus Agreement signed and ratified, the British Empire looked beyond Europe and into the colonies of Asia and Africa. Many citizens are worried that the German Empire will backstab them for their colonies; however, the government is preparing for that moment to come.
