His father was a teacher at VU Medisch Centrum (VU University Medical Center Amsterdam), teaching other students to become doctors or other fields in the medical career. Robbert became interested in becoming a doctor at the age of fourteen. At the end of his third year of secondary education, he had to pick one of four profiles that was going to affect his life and career opinions. He selected the Natuur en Gezondheid (N&G; literally, "nature and health") profile. During the time of education, he had to take physics, chemistry, history, mathematics B, English, and Dutch. After he finished his profile, Robbert went to the Academisch Medisch Centrum (Academic Medical Center) during his four years at Universiteit van Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam). When the four years were completed, he got his degree and went straight into the Royal Netherlands Army almost a year after the 9/11 attacks. After three years in the Royal Army, he decided to try out for the Korps Commandotroepen (KCT). Training to become one of the members took him around three years to complete. After the training, he was sent to all over the world to help out NATO for about three years until 9/11 happened. He started going to the Middle East and Africa more than Russia or China. After ten years with the KCT, he retired from the army and returned back to Amsterdam. The civilian life wasn't for Robbert after being with the army for many years. He decided to apply for Cygnus Military Solutions to become a private military contractor. His application was accepted and Robbert traveled to Cardiff.
