Usually for druids, you only ever need an animal handle check if you're trying to affect animals other than your companion. It is assumed that your animal companion follows you as best it can (which means you basically play both characters as PC's, in terms of roleplay).

But that's what I usually do/have seen done. We'd still need [@Speedwagon] to confirm.
