Yes! It is a Rwby tradition to have a plucky comic relief that turns out to be an awesome fighter and a psychopath in a transparent closet!

Maybe you could go with clawed gauntlets or Katars(maybe they shift into one or the other), So as to get that more primal feel by hitting and slashing, with some other thing to give that RWBY flair. Another idea would be shortswords/daggers for rapid fire attacks, that then turn into automatic pistols/SMGs to help keep up the heat at range. Just a thought.

Like Raijin says a bladed chain might be out of character for Leaf from what we know of him. So maybe he should have a poke like attacks that scatters the enemy team, so maybe rockets or grenades for long distance combat? And a close range weapon that's brutally fast? If you want to use something like the bladed chain maybe use a great sword that changes into a bladed whip for close to mid range and for ranged combat turn into a grenade launcher?
