These demons sign their unwilling victims up to a contract in exchange for the ownership of their soul. Once a human is signed up they are granted a new chance at life and given powers, weapons, and abilities that both mirror and are inspired by the demon that signed up the human. The demon themselves are then able to manifest their own spiritual being into a human form so that they can follow and interact with their contractee in their every day lives, however their own powers are severely hindered to a tiny fraction of what they originally were. Since the governments of the world noticed an increase in the number of demonic beings that have been making deals with humans they came to agreement that for the safety of the human race a separate division should be created, known as WDD (World Demonic Defence). The WDD is a task force of speciality hunters who are given the authority to eliminate these demons and their illegally living hosts from the world by any means necessary. In order to complete their job with the limited resources that they have, some WDD agents have resorted to acts of bribery and even hostage holding, forcing the stronger of the demons to target and kill their own kind, or risk being killed themselves. This dog eat dog environment has created a very unstable world where even being suspected as someone with a binding contract could be quite deadly. I will allow 'daemons' as well which in ancient Greek referred to good spiritual beings rather than bad. This should be reflected in the demon's personality and style of fighting/abilities. These impure beings are the ancient ancestors of Demons and Angels, along with the traces of other such mysterious beings. To your general population they will appear quite similar to their human counterparts—living, breathing, and even fornicating with those around them; all in an attempt to live a normal life. It is only in the darkest of shadows that these tainted part-humans decide to show what it is that they are really made of. In this adventure the players will take the role of a Tainted character and the actions they choose will help affect the outcomes and progression of the story. I will be aiming to produce a grungy, urban styled world with themes that may appear wicked or even pagan in nature. It is an environment where even being suspected of being a part-human can lead to all sorts of strife, whether it is desired or not. The Story & Environment This Roleplay takes place in a low lying city environment—its name and location are unimportant—but what is known is that it straddles a river which leads out to the vast sea, that it is surrounded by an array of suburbs, forest and farmlands, and that it holds a high population of cultural density. It is a landscape with with sturdy, robust buildings, complete with the presence of towering pillars that extend up towards the heavens. The Chthonic Rift is a parallel universe that mimics the real world, distorting its lustrous visuals into a realm of chaos and madness, filled with the endless sins of the city inhabitants. It is a nightmarish entity that has the ability to break the laws of physics, to change one's perception of reality, and will participate in any way possible to consume and devour those who enter its domain. For centuries these two worlds have stayed separate—the dark realm in one domain, and the world of current in another—but recently the barrier between the two has begun to collapse, and the ancient seal that held back the horrors has been broken. Now the Chthonic Rift has been allowed to infect and leech into the real world, a threat that has the potential to destroy the balance between the two realms. Was this an accident... or something more sinister in nature? Playable Species Tainted beings are split into several different species depending on their ancestry origins. They are fully aware of these abnormalities but may not understand the purpose of their existence, and why they differ from those around them. While they may be know to select individuals of pure nature, they prefer to conceal their identities in an attempt to prevent public backlash. Being one with a Tainted bloodline will allow an individual to enter into the Chthonic Rift. They can either willingly enter through the use of a spell portal, or may simply be dragged in by the rift itself. Whatever the case, once inside the part-human must call upon their spoiled heritage in order to fight their way through to freedom, or deeper into the madness. In addition to being able to occupy either the real world or the Chthonic Realm, a Tainted one can visually and audibly communicate with other part-humans from the other side, appearing before them as a ghostly figure. Angels: Angels are the descendants of holy entities; an offspring of great power and strength, but also fragile and delicate. Their bodies are not built to take heavy hits and the continual use of their abilities can cause heavy fatigue and exhaustion. Angels have transcended to a point where they are able to harness the light around them and convert it into a signature weapon of their own desire, a tool that can carve down the most deadly of foes with a single strike. A skilled Angel can also use the light around themselves to burst teleport their bodies from one location to another. It is a technique that requires a large amount of stamina but can reap some powerful rewards if used successfully. In addition they are able to summon a pair of feathered, luminous wings from their shoulder blades for a slower, but more conservative mode of transport. Demons: Similar to Angels, Demons are descendants of monsters and fiends; corrupt beings who utilise the shadowy darkness around themselves for their accursed powers. While they lack the raw, overwhelming strength that an Angel holds, a Demon excels in their remarkably high stamina and endurance. They can fight long after their allies have fallen and until their foes collapse from exhaustion. They are able to regenerate their injured bodies while in the Rift and can even regrow lost limbs if given a suitable amount of time. Demonic weapons have a tendency to utilise additional elemental and arcane effects. Fire, Lighting and Poison are a few of the more commonly known traits with many Demons known to be dirty fighters for relying such unfair advantages. Witches: The least spoiled of all the species would be the witches, a selection of part-humans who are barely Tainted and yet able to see and enter into the Rift. This dangerous combination places these individuals in a precarious position and thus they end up turning towards magic to protect themselves from the atrocities they may face inside. Witches are usually seen carrying round either a family heirloom, or a book of spells; both items being a suitable source of their powers but renders them completely vulnerable without it. Any weapons they carry are typically primitive in nature, imbued with an odd and quirky spell to aid in their journey. The most feared of these witches are the ones who have mastered the dark art of Necromancy. It is a dangerous spell capable of temporarily summoning a creature of the damned at the cost of the user's own life force. At their peak these deadly puppets can rival that of an Angel, with only a few casters who have ever pushed themselves to this limit. Alas, their weak human minds can only handle so much of this dark energy before they eventually crumble into psychosis, madness and oblivion. Therianthropes: The curse of the Therianthrope is knowing that that these part-humans will change form upon entering the Chthonic Rift, morphing into a humanoid form that is both animal and beast-like in nature. At first the mutation will be unstoppable; a wild and painful transformation that the individual must endure. However with time and patience a cursed human will eventually learn to harness these powers, to only call upon them when needed, and to prevent themselves from becoming the wild beast that they fear inside. Therianthropes become most vulnerable during the nights of a full moon, a time when the barrier between the Rift and the current world is at its most harmonious. These beings will unwillingly be dragged into the alternate dimension for a period of days, forcing them to fight for their survival. It is during this time that they learn to become ruthless warriors, taking on monstrous creatures with nothing but their bare hands, while also building packs with others of their kind; all to better their own survival. Succubus & Incubus: The Succubi and Incubi are from a long hereditary line that can be traced back towards demons, and yet they have managed to evolve into something more parasitical and bloodthirsty than their demonic counterparts. They are a species that prolongs their lives by devouring the remains of a human body, utilising their blood as a short term solution and consuming the organs as a long term source of sustenance. Like Demons, Succubi and Incubi are able to regenerate from their wounds but can only do so in the Rift and are unable to regrow any lost limbs. Many of these part-humans are hemokinetics, an ability that allows them to draw the blood from their body and turn it into a variety of offensive and defensive weapons; including swords, firing needles, and large spines. While a Succubi and Incubi can survive in the Rift with a minimal amount of blood, in the real world they do run the risk of exsanguination if they use their abilities. Banshees: Banshees are the combined descendants of Witches and Angels, a species of part-humans who are physically unable to enter into the Chthonic Rift but instead capable of sending forth their astral bodies into the cursed realm. These astral bodies will appear and ghostly transparent as their illuminated bodies levitate their way through the Rift, leaving the impression that they are slowly moving under a sea of water. As a Tainted being of such peculiar attributes, the Banshees will mostly rely on a mixture of psionic and divine magic, manipulating the world around them with telekinesis like abilities and attacking enemies with an assortment of energy blasts. They are resilient to many physical counterattacks but have the added risk of being unable to defend their unconscious body whilst in the Rift. An injury sustained to the physical body in the real world will be felt by the astral self.
