He was only a year old when he was found abandoned and half frozen in the snow. As soon as Baroness Clotilde found that he was not magically affiliated, she didn't think twice of adopting him. He was taken in and treated as a son and a brother. Thinking that he needed to do something to repay the goodness the Palebrookes, he trained well with the sword and earned for himself the title of Black Knight of the Cross in his hometown. He eventually requested to serve in the Citadel. With his skills with the sword, he had expected to be assigned to the Citadel's elite squad, tasked with the protection of the Emperor himself. But fate took a different path and he found himself in a completely different squad than he had imagined. He was assigned as the guardian of a mage, Elise Shadewater, a magically inclined human who does all the biddings of the Empire. He was outraged. Why would the Empire place him with a mage? They were dangerous and not be trusted. But when his complaints and request to be transferred fell in deaf ears, he had no choice but to do as he was commanded. On their first mission together, he was severely injured due to his own carelessness and hesitation to work hand in hand with a mage. Elise, upon seeing his injuries, had not hesitated and healed him, rendering herself weak and vulnerable as a result. He had initially thought that she was going to take his life but was extremely suprised when his pain was relieved. From that day onwards, he had looked at her in a different light and finally understood why he was assigned to her. She, despite being a mage herself, protects them all from the danger of rebels, upheavals and magical attacks. All this at her own expense. Eventually, he learned to work side by side with Elise, their movements precise and perfectly in tune with each other that they were almost unstoppable. He also learned to get along with the silent, apathetic young lady, often times staying quietly by her side, offering her company and what he hoped was comfort for her solitude. But despite the comfortable camaraderie he likes to think he had developed with the female mage, he was still fearful of her capabilities. While she was mainly a healer, she had a strange, eerie ability to manipulate the mind of her victims. Several times he had witnessed her seemingly enjoying tormenting fellow mages and branded rebels of the Empire. It always made him wonder just what it was that made her that way. Predisposition to the Magi: He was raised to fear the magi and their capabilities. When he had been younger, he vowed to help the Empire hunt down and eliminate all the magis as to prevent history from repeating itself. But as he was unexpectedly assigned to guard a mage himself, spending time with Elise eventually changed his point of view and now looks at them neutrally albeit still a little prejudiced. Personality: Steadfast, Honest, loyal to his assigned duty despite his conflicting emotions and thoughts of the magi.
